I spent far too much of my only weekend in Hamburg in this place. Why? British sport, that’s why. If you want to see English Premier League games or Rugby, then this is the place for you. The beer is a bit pricey but overall the place fulfils it’s intended purpose pretty well.

A friendly (ish), sports-orientated, Irish pub in central Hamburg.

If you are far away from home, let’s say in Singapore or Tarragona or Zaporizhia (don’t make square eyes, Ukrainian names can be as tricky as Chinese), don’t know anyone in town and all you want is just a beer and a frendly word - the place to go is, yes, an Irish bar!

Finnegans Wake is that bar in Hamburg. You get your beer, you have that nice little chit-chat with bartender and waitresses, you meet fellow expats, same as you are, foreign and lonely, bitch a bit about the way Germans do things and you go home feeling good.

There are all sorts of people coming to Finnegans for all sorts of reasons: expats to socilaise and drink obviously, backpackers come to ask where to spend a night or where Hauptbahnhoff is, lawyers and business crowd come for a pint of Guinness and I come mainly for a Sunday pub quiz. It starts at 8pm every Sunday, you make/join a team and hopefully win 30EUR (never happened to me). I’ll see you there!

In theory its got everything for the expat away from home. Very “lived in feel”, good bar staff, dark …...... but i hated it. Showed Rugby instead of footy one time I went. Rugby! Bloody Rugby! Lager came out of tap with paper sellotaped to it saying “lager”. Got the impression it was whatever cheap crap they could get their hands on. Very expensive as well. They do show footy most times though and can show LFC and Arsenal at the same time in Champs League.

I find nothing really special about Finnegan's, but I like it just the same. There's something about it's close proximity to the office and their comfortable seating which makes this the prime locale for an after-work pint (or in my case, a baby-beer).

What I like about Finnegan's is that it has different types of seating to suit your mood and the size of your party. You can sit at the bar and chat with the Bartender (no smoking at the bar, though), you can sit in a "booth" (where the music is just low enough to hear your friends) or around a small table in the back with a few friends or coworkers.

Beer is a little pricier than other Hamburg locales (and they charge a euro for a small pack of under-salted peanuts), but there's a nice selection of "different" beers (none of that Heinekrap here).

I recommend Finnegan's for those who like their pub-hops to be in the middle of the week and a little less crowded than the rest (however watch out for sports games, otherwise you'll be waiting in a queue a mile long).

Many Irish pubs abroad are painfully gimmicky. Not so Finnegans Wake. It brought me back to good old times in Dublin straight away. Genuinely laidback, friendly bar staff, pleasant interior - you really could spend hours in here, drinking with friends or on your own. Drinks are a bit expensive, and the Guinness is a tad cold (or is that just me?!), but otherwise this is a wonderful place to spend some time in. Clearly a hot spot for sports lovers, the atmosphere for watching the rugby was great!

Finnegans is the best Irish pub in Hamburg. It reminds me a lot of "The Wellington" in Leeds, a pub I had many happy times in, but that you kept wondering in the back of your mind why you were drinking there. The expat crowd in here aren't particularly friendly, or unfriendly, I think you have to get into it. There's always a LOT of live sport on. The tables have that unique smokey grime that will never come off and leaves you stinking by the time you leave. The Wellington had that too. How do some pubs manage to seem clean(ish) and some eternally dirty? Not that I really mind, just that, there are far nicer and cheaper places to drink in Hamburg. It's alright though, reminds you of home, if that's what you wanted... ;)

Hamburg's best Irish pub. A great place to watch the footy or the rugby with a decent crowd and friendly bar staff. It can get a bit dark and smokey in here and, as the beer is foreign, it's kinda expensive. Apart from that, i think i have found my home away from home.

Check out poker night on monday's!

I think I've found my Rugby Pub!

Nice comfy seats, plenty of screens to choose from, large main screen that's promised to cover all the games for this rugby world cup.

Yummy cider, there's mention of a suckling pig on a spilt on the blackboard as well as poker nights on Monday.

The drinks are a bit steep especially if your drinking internationally
A little smokey as well by the end of it but definitely the best Irish pub in this city with table service and what looks like a pretty good pub food menu
