I've no idea why people like it here. The cupcakes are so mediocre - especially given every man, woman and mouse is selling them these days.
Go to the Hummingbird bakery instead.
SUCH a letdown.
I'd set my sights on this place during a recent trip to London, and the website sets it up with all pink sparkles and happiness.
However what greeted me were grumpy staff and stodgy cupcakes with cheap, sickly sweet icing.
Avoid avoid avoid - trying the Hummingbird Bakery instead!
My absolutely fave cake shop in central London. Yes, ok so maybe the colourful morsels are not exactly as heavenly as Soho's top-notch famous French patisserie's offerings but the cosy ambience and row upon row of eye-catching goodies makes up for the lack of grand indulgence.
You can gorge yourself on the gorgeously vibrant cupcakes - often themed and always yummy - or create a selection box to enjoy at home. A customised, personalised service is also available, and you can shop online too.
Well worth a visit if you happen to be hanging out in Covent Garden...

After passing by this place so many times and being taken by its decor; i though it was time to try it. Upon going inside.. i noticed that its a cheap version of most uptown cupcake bakeries. I bough the red velvet cupcake.. and honestly its not the best one i have had. The cupcake doesn't have the indulgent taste of other red velvet cupcakes. so all in all i was disappointed and would not be recommending it.

You can pick up some amazing sugar treats here but for me, Candy Cakes isn't quite as good as Hummingbird cupcakes. That said, this shop is perfect for an afternoon cake fix and the smoothies here are surprisingly good.
Not as expensive as you would initially imagine and the look and feel of the shop is extremely inviting to the weary passer-by!
OMG these are so much sugar you will die! These fun, lovely cakes come individually boxed if you want or in a bag or buy a few to fall in a diabetic coma :-)
The staff member who served me was lovely but it wasn’t a rushed moment so I don’t know if it is always like this. The cakes, though, were alightly dry and really too sweet for me to handle. Even though I bought a latte with it I still could not finish it.
There are a lot to choose from but look at the sign not at the cake. Sometimes the top can be deceptive!
I really loved this little shop. Even on the outside of the shop it smelled like sugar. Once you entered the shop you are totally flashed due to all the colors and very strong smell off sugar.
The cup cakes are so pretty and looking as delicious as the sweetest things on the world you can hardly restist to bite them all ;)
Seriously if you are at Covent Garden you must pay a visit.
I have never seen so Beautiful cakes! There are so attractive by their decoration, and their are so delicious! The atmosphere of the shop is really lovely and the staff very friendly.
The price is a little bit expensive but trust me, it worths it :)
I tried a cupcakes from Candy Cupcake during the summer after wondering past their brightly coloured little store at the bottom of Covent Garden.
The cupcakes themselves are gorgeous, almost cartoonish, although they are huge so it might be worth sharing one.
It doesn't quite match up to Ella's for taste, but it's definitely a fun treat to eat!
What a cute little place near Seven Dials roundabout.
Kids and those young at heart will enjoy the sheer brightness of the sugar fixes on offer. I've been there a few times now for cookies and coffee and enjoyed it every time. The coffee is not half bad and the others gave other hot drinks (hot choc) the thumbs up as well.
It's a tiny little shop but they've got an open gazebo thingy down the little side street and in the summer put tables outside on Monmouth.
Treat yourself next time you're in the area.
A tiny little bakery which serves wonderful cakes and treats.
If you like big sugary treats then you can do no worse than visiting this place.
We bought a couple of cup cakes to take home and I have to admit they were demolished very quickly.
Each cup cake is very bright and bursting with flavour, some covered with sweets and others with mini cupcakes and truffles.
The shop is tiny and gets busy very quickly.
My gripe is that it took ages to be served - I was second in the queue and the staff were so disorganised that it took ten minutes for them to realise I was there (and I was trying to get their attention!).
I have not tried their fudge but it did look lovely - maybe on a future trip to Covent Garden I may pop in and get some.
Candy Cupcakes are great for a treat but at £2.90 each cup cake (at least) it's not cheap!
A lovely well presented shop in Londons Covent Garden. The cakes are amazing and well worth the price. A great snack for yourself or also a lovely gift to take home after a day out in London. The cakes can be boxed for gifts or in a bag ready to eat.
Definately a place for a cake lover to visit.
I didnt try out the smoothies but they looked good too.
Lovely pink themed seating area inside with neon signs to match. Service with a smile.
Candy Cakes is the place to go when you are visiting London. They have amazing cakes of different colors and tastes. Besides the cakes, they also have great smoothies and other drinks.
I had lunch sometimes there, they also offer a wide range of salads, pastas and pizza.Amazing!
As a big fan of cakes, I really enjoyed Candy Cakes. Many colors, nice staff and pleasant surroundings. The cakes are really delicious, the perfect place to hang around with some friends!
AMAZING CAKES!!!!!!
if you like cakes - you will love this place. they have so many different flavours, you’ll never be able to choose. We had banana and toffee, raisin and apple, and apple and raspberry. All cakes have gorgeous coloured icing and a sweet on top. Theyre like an iced muffin, and they do have bigger cake slabs in the counter section too. it was a lovely day when we went and they have a cute sitting section outside. They dont have much seating, so if you dont manage to get a seat, i think they deduct 10p off prices for take away, so you can take away your lovely cakes and sit at seven dials just up from it - gorgeous on a sunny day.
This place is brill esp if you want a little sugar high!
They also do very reasonably priced, baguettes and paninis with nice fillings.
One of my regular places to go on a day trip to london!
I was disappointed on my visit today. If you are buying cake in a brightly painted store, you’d expect the staff to welcome you, make you feel at home, and generally keep the atmosphere at a fun level. Not here.
Two of the 3 staff members were rude, the toffee-banana muffin was mediocre, and the 'ice-cream shake’ was a warm and tasteless concoction. I have visited the Carnaby Street store before, and there was more variety there. The service was similar, however.
If it’s true that these are just defrosted, iced Millie’s muffins (as suggested in another reviewer’s comments), then not only does that explain my current tummy-ache, but it’ll guarantee my non-repeat custom.
Just try not to get the shakes if you decide to go there…
I was walking through Covent Garden on my way to somewhere else when I first walked past this shop. When I saw a window of massive cupcakes with neon frostings, I simply had to stop. What cake lover could pass by such a sight and not be curious?
The tiny shop had an assortment of unique flavours for both cake and icing, and each cake was topped with additional sweets. I got a berry one, satisfied that I now would not have to find lunch for the day.
The cupcake, however, was disappointing. It tasted more like a muffin, which is okay, if what you wanted was a muffin. And the icing was rock hard and kind of hurt my teeth and made me question how fresh everything was. I had expected a bit more from a shop whose presentation alone had the ability to pull me in off the road, but the experience was very unfulfilling.
Brand new crazy cake shop, with icing so lurid you’ll think you’re undergoing live brain surgery. Good place for bringing a mother or sister too, also does huge cups of hot chocolate drowning marshmallows within. Like roald dahl’s head come to life.
The cakes taste and look very good but I was surprised at how much they cost! The shops look fantastic both on the inside and the outside and they have just the kind of quaint quality one looks for in a cake place, so I would definitely recommend a visit.
