Now, I pride myself on being a globe trotter. A real deal nomad. I’ll catch just about any train and crash in any sort of weird place, I could sleep through a snow storm. And I’ll be the first to tell you a hostel’s a hostel, basta.
But this place is much, much more. It takes you two steps from the central train station to get to this oasis.
There’s an intriguing background to Hostel Celica: its voluminous living spaces account for it being a rehabilitated prison!
It boasts a most peculiar architectural style. You can rent prison-cell-type rooms with prison bars and all. There are lofty sitting corners under wooden beams with intricate wood work. The whole thing is so incongruous.
You can dine at cafeteria type tables or try the Indian style with low tables and cushions, the hole tammale.
The paradox to this former austere law enforcement building is that the walls on the outside are covered in extraordinary tags.
However, extra comfort doesn’t call for extra cash. 17€/night with royal breakfast included, internet access and great advice from the staff.
No wonder this wonderland is recommended as the 1st Hostel in Slovenia, and one of the most interesting hostels world-wide.
A must-see.
