1 review of Caves of Saint Pietersberg hill in English
Maastricht is one of those cities Dutch people visit to indulge in good food, good wine and luxury shopping. This city has a wonderful warm atmosphere – but then perhaps I’m biased as I lived here as a student for 4 years, so I can get quite nostalgic about the place. There are several spots in Maastricht to recommend but I’ll start with the caves under the Saint Pietersberg hill.
These caves are definitely worth a visit with 20,000 passageways formed by manual labourers cutting away blocks. Various artists have left their marks, and very old writings on the wall can be found here as well . The caves were used as hiding places (for people and pieces of precious art!) during World War II.
As you’re far underground it can get quite chilly, even in high summer, so do bring a jumper or jacket. There are guided tours in Dutch, English and German – check the VVV website (Maastricht tourist board website) for specific times of the different tours.
