This is a must for the visitor to Prague, the imposing St.Vitus Cathedral dominates the city skyline, and the whole complex is worth a good half day of your time. The changing of the guard is every hour, with a fanfare at noon (worth taking in), there is a lovely restaurant where you can indulge yourself at a reasonable cost, I can recommend the apple stroudle, and algerian coffee!. There are wonderful photo opportunities, within the Castle, and from the walls, which reveals magnificent views of the city. Don’t miss it!

Prague Castle is a 'must see’ for visitors to Prague. Several destructive wars and fires along with differing political forces have combined to create an intriguing mix of palaces, churches and fortifications.
The Prague Castle complex consists of Saint Vitus Cathedral (Prague’s most recognisable landmark), several palaces, viewing towers, art galleries, a monastery, The Story of Prague Castle Museum, Golden Lane and St. George’s Basilica; the latter being a nice venue for early evening classical concerts.
Today, Prague Castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic and serves as the historical and political centre for both city and state.
The Changing of the Guard at the front gates takes place every hour. At noon the ceremony includes a fanfare.

Prague Castle is a vast castle complex, some of which is still in use and much of which is still in excellent condition. Although one of Prague’s largest tourist attractions, the castle still houses the President’s Official residence and many governmental offices.
The complex itself contains buildings of a variety of uses built over centuries. The museum of its history is well worth a visit for an overview of the 10 centuries it has taken for the complex to be built to its current form. Summer palaces, sports grounds, gardens, schools, museums and galleries can all be found within the walls.
Excellent fortifications are on display, reminding you that it has not been long since the castle has known danger.
The beautiful St Vitus’ cathedral and St George’s Basilica form the central part of the complex and are both exquisite examples of religious architecture.
I would suggest getting there early as the crowds become quite large and it is a very big complex that takes a few hours to explore superficially. Every moment is worth it though – its like taking part in history!

Art in a grand manner. Worth seeing. Walk - crossing the bridge (one of them) on foot is an aesthetic experience. Leave time for a leisurely visit. Do not go hoping to get great souvenirs - the main point is to look and take in the details and the art, always the art. Look up a lot while walking around. Take time to pause in the nearby areas outside the castle. Study your history beforehand or get a book and read as you walk.

Prague Castle is immense and overlooks Prague, as it has for more than a thousand years. It’s the biggest ancient castle in the world.
Like all such ancient places, it’s undergone constant renovations over the years, and you can see the different additions through the centuries. The sites inside the castle are numerous: the changing of the guard at the main gate, the Old Royal Palace, Lobkowicz Palace (which has an exhibit covering Czech history), the Basilica of St George, the Royal Garden, the cottages of Golden Lane, the Summer Palace, and St Vitus Cathedral. It’s a good idea to plan your trip through the castle with your guide book or with their own excellent web site.
Hours change with the time of year. Best to check the website for times and prices of admission. But it’s definitely worth it. Plan to spend some time.
