3 reviews of The Montcalm Hotel in English
Went here with a friend to use a voucher I had purchased for a pair of cocktails. ALthough the lobby looks like it is still being finished off, the bar and resturant area is all brand-new. I liked the style now, which is classically modern and sleek - especially as I seem to remember this hotel being a bit chintzy before.
The bar is called Barre Noir, and noir it is. Black chandeliers and columns in the sort of circular space contrast perfectly with the onyx-lit bar. The theme is old Hollywood glamour and rich upholstery and tiled-look walls add to this.
Cocktails were really well-made - I went for a cosmopolitan which was potent and pink, and my friend had a standard mojito with blessedly-little ice. At £9.50 they're expensive, but not as much as most hotel bars.
A nice place for a revive stop after shopping on Oxford Street perhaps?
I had afternoon tea at The Montcalm Hotel with my daughter during a recent visit to London and we were very disappointed, to say the least. The hotel looks very nice (no complaints there at all) but firstly, we were expected to have afternoon in the lobby/reception area, with guests and staff members walking by and secondly, when the afternoon tea was brought to us we couldnt believe our eyes. There were 6 small finger sandwiches (which we worked out to be 2 slices of bread, each cut into 3 sandwiches, 2 scones with butter and jam, and a few very small treats, between 2 of us. We do understand that afternoon tea is not a meal but to expect guests to pay £20 each for such meagre offerings is utterly ridiculous. We both left The Montcalm still hungry and most certainly will not be returning when we next visit London. Last year we had afternoon at The Ritz and at £40 each, very expensive I realise but 1 of the things we just had to do in London & it is The Ritz after all, it is double the price of The Montcalm but in quality/quantity of food and setting of where you actually have afternoon tea it is far superior and worth far more than double of what we received at The Montcalm.
I went to have afternoon tea with a friend here and it is the best place where I have had afternoon tea yet.
It is a 5 star hotel and, although the afternoon tea is served in the lobby, it is well set for it. The setting is very good, with comfortable sofas and luxurious surroundings.
You first choose the tea that you would like and a whole tea pot is served, giving plenty of tea for two, having three teas each by the end of it.
There are three different trays of food, one with sandwiches, another one with scones and the top one with sweet things. Then the cream and jam for the scones are served separately.
Both the tea and the food are plenty so have a very small lunch beforehand and just have nothing at all!
The afternoon tea is served from 1pm to 6pm and cost 20 pounds per person. It is a bit pricey, but would make a great treat to take your mum to (that will be my next visit ;) or for a good friend visiting you in London, etc.
Its location is also very handy, as it is a 2 minute walk from Marble Arch, so a great spot to take a break from your shopping trip in Oxford Street :)
