One of Oxford’s hidden gems, Jesus College is tucked away on Turl Street. It is a small College, founded by Elizabeth I in 1571 (the only Elizabethan college in Oxford). The first quad contains the chapel, which is small but has wonderful stained glass in the east window and also a bust of Lawrence of Arabia, one of the college’s most famous old member. The Principal’s Lodgings, which has a distinctive shell porch over the door, is also in this quad. The entrance to the Hall is off the passage through to second quad. The Hall contains portraits of some of the college’s benefactors and famous old members, including ex-Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Second quad has a marvelous wisteria on one of the walls, so be sure to check this out if you are visiting in May. Many people, like me, think Jesus is one of the prettiest colleges in Oxford.
