I went there on Sunday to eat with my children and husband. I had booked a table as I knew from previous experience it gets very busy. We were given the long table next to a group of young tourists, I would have preferred a table to ourselves but the quality of the food made up for the table disappointment.
My husband and children all ordered the cheese burger and that went down a treat. I ordered the fish and chips and I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the haddock. The fish was moist and succulent, not a bone in mine, and the beer batter was golden and crispy. In my view the best fish and chips I had in years. Service was a bit flimsy; one of the waitresses obviously had never done the job before. A few times I worried for my son’s life when she arrived with a tray full of drinks that she could hardly hold on to on her palm. But the food was excellent!
This is exactly what it’s name says….. a cafe with a big terrace, by the riverside, on the South Bank…. I came across it by accident while I was looking for something else, and desperate for a coffee!
It serves lovely simple home-cooked food, scrummy sandwiches and soup and stews of the day, all made from fresh ingredients. It’s not particularly cheap, but not outrageous either, and the mocha coffee was great. One of the best things is the location….there’s a big terrace with great views of the river - lots of space to watch the world go by. I was ‘entertained’ by two rival trumpeters on either side of the bridge, which was actually quite funny…..it ended up as something like that scene from a film I can’t remember, with the banjo players!!
It’s quite an arty crowd there; I met a street poet and a musician….makes for interesting conversations.
