strengthofabear: “Came here on New Years Day for Lunch with Ruiz and others, ended up staying till 11pm. Good jukebox. Helpful staff. Nice beer garden. Good location. Food was very average, standard pub stuff at best and not a lot of choice.” more...3 reviews of The Roebuck in English
A few friends of mine recommened this pub for Sunday Lunch, one even said it can be very busy so maybe phone first and book a table.
The staff were very nice but oh my god the food was horrible. I ordered a Rib eyed roast beef when my plate arrived it looked more like Iceland Lamb. It was thin fatty cheap slices of something?? The roast poatoes were hard and seemed to be frozen warmed up rocks. When I told the waitress I wasn't happy she said the usual cook was away so maybe we did pick the wrong weekend!
Such a shame
wmunsie A real shame I agree. As a local who lives a stones throw away, I have to say the owner Dan is amazing chef and actually caters for the Houses of Parliament! It is true though as he was away with his family for 2 weeks.

If you’re going to watch a game of Cricket at the Oval, this is probably the pub you want to come to before the match. A friendly, working man’s vibe and plenty of beers on tap. I didn’t get a chance to try the food but i can say that they have a fine selection of crisps at the bar! The Roebuck also is a great place to watch live sport (particularly rugby). We managed to catch the Lions game at the weekend and even managed to score a table! A small outdoor seating area caps this place off with a very respectable 4 stars.
Areas of improvement - Toilets weren’t exceptionally clean and the bar staff were a bit slow (that being said we were a group of 16!)
The Roebuck is a bowler’s arm’s distance from the Oval cricket ground and historically a fin pre and post match meeting place to discuss all things cricket. For the rest of the year the Roebuck is simply a lovely homely place with a country pub air about it.
Often quiet in the evenings the Roebuck is a friendly place to drink added to that there is the feeling ofdrinking in someone’s living room. It could be considered a touch eccentric for some, almost English tea room or Torquay B&B.
There is nothing to write home about concerning the ale or even the standard pub grub, it is all as expected; no thrills, not expensive but still thoroughly pleasent. In many ways the Roebuck just feels like your local on your first visit. There is a garden and a pub cat for added quaintness, brightly lit and easy to find the Roebuck simply must be visited should you be in the area for the cricket or if you’re just plain lost; you’ll be looked after here.
