Compliment amethyst (17-06-2008) 5

If you want an unforgettable summer experience, not far from the heart of the city, this is an event that fits the bill. Sadly though, the bill is quite high, as ticket prices start close to £50. The setting - glorious Hampton Court Palace - is even more magical by moonlight and truly enhances your listening enjoyment.

Star turns vary on an annual basis with some regular visitors (and visiting players). I’ve enjoyed Van Morrison here - although he was slightly lacklustre the night I saw him - and adored the Gypsy Kings - along with the rest of the audience, who danced vibrantly and enthusiastically wherever they could find the space… I’d love to see the Buenavista Social Club who appear every few years (and are on tomorrow…!).

The atmosphere here, as you might imagine, is uniquely wonderful; it’s extraordinary to wander through the awe-inspiring floodlight historic courtyards, to tread the cobblestones in the footsteps of Henry and his wives, to take-in the serene beauty of the immaculate traditional gardens.

There’s a decent (although fairly limited) choice of food and drink here - sold (or sampled for free, in some cases) via stalls in the grounds. It’s a relaxing, grown-up, well-behaved spectacle (with a friendly crowd) likely to remain in your memory for a long-time to come…
