Another hidden gem… tucked away in back streets of Barnes.
It’s more of a very good honest pub with very, very good food… For me, the label Gastropub cunjures up images of yet another refurb. The Brown Dog seems different.
Have only been for mid-week dinner. Can’t wait to try Sunday lunch!
The Brown Dog Gastro Pub. This place has it all, great food, wine, ambience and a fun load of people, always milling around, and to top that all off, dog baskets in every corner, as, as the name suggests, it’s a dog friendly restaurant. (Mr Brown dog really does exist and may show his face, however I think mom was not too choosey who she slept with, as he is a bit patchy in places) They even cater for our canine friends, as behind the bar you will see an array of doggie treats from pig’s ears to denture sticks to keep them all happy, whilst you tuck into your great food. Every day is great, but Sunday is the one we all wait for. Certainly saves slaving away all morning to produce probably something not as good! Roast Beef fans, you have found your nirvana, as this has to be the best place in London to get rib of beef on the bone and Yorkshire puddies, served with the usual selection of seasonal veggies. No asparagus in October here… and No tired pale slices of silverside either, rather succulent Scottish beef, which ever way you like it! No sad flat yorkies, of over boiled veggies or roasters swimming in stale fat. Nope this is the one! Great selection of wines, best cider in town, classy fun staff, and interesting people. You sure don’t want to be the one facing the wall here, so dive in first! Lunches and dinners are an easy affair either in the garden or by the fire (real of course) Prices: what you would expect for good home cooked food, but won’t leave you balking at the bill or scratching around for change in the car. You simply pay for what you get here, unlike paying for what you don’t get elsewhere, as is more often the case! 3 courses and wine : £38-50 squid per person, but you do walk out rounder and appreciate the double doors on exit. One thing: Parking! This is clearly a pub the local residents don’t want to share with us outsiders, as parking is a nightmare, so be careful, the twitchers are on the phone to the parking maids the moment your back is turned, so to respect them, park a few streets away and enjoy the walk, it’s a pretty area anyhow. Last but not least, they bake all their own bread on site and have started to produce a selection of spreads, jams and chutneys to take home to enjoy…. Let me know what you think?
