Guy Fawkes celebrations are alive and well at the West Country Carnivals, believed to be the largest illuminated carnivals in Europe. These date back to the gunpowder plot of 1605, and their history is littered with references to guys:

The Carnivals are for charity, and deserve your publicity. The plot was linked not only with Guy Fawkes but also Robert Parsons who come from nearby Nether Stowey, who the locals celebrate as heroes. Bridgewater later become a cavalier stronghold, holding out against Oliver Cromwell and the Parliamentarians until the decisive battle at nearby Langport.
North Petherton’s big advantage is that it usually takes place on the first Saturday in November, so it’s ideal if you need to travel a fair distance. If you’ve never been, you really should go!
