I want to write a brilliant review about Johns, but I’m feeling a tad out of sorts so it’s not wonderful. That said, I’m giving it four stars because I know I’m being a bit of a grumpy cow today.

The little shop is really lovely. I like the friendly old dude behind the counter (who doesn’t look much like a 'John’ at all.) -And someone should pay for language lessons for Rob - They’re Spanish not Italian! hehe!

My prawn mayonnaise sandwich looked a lot yummier than it actually was. There was nothing wrong with it, but it didn’t wow me. I think maybe it was my choice of filling was just the wrong one (there were a few to choose from!) I could only manage half of it though.

I am yet to eat my banana, which looks very yummy. I’m going to eat it after my cup of tea. I really want to like Johns, and I think I do. I just need to go back when I’m feeling more sociable and feel like chatting to the lovely staff.

The best thing about this place? It makes me might happy when you can get lunch anywhere in London for less then three quid. £2.40 for a sandwich and piece of fruit? Bargain.

No doubt I’ll come back soon and update this review with a cheery one.

You know when you happen to walk down a road that you used to work on or live near, but haven’t had cause to visit since you moved? And when you go back you start remembering all the great places that you’d go to, and you think to yourself “Wow, I used to love that place, I should make the effort to go back more”... well I did that today with John’s, and I actually dragged the person I was with in there for a coffee and a sandwich just so they could experience the marvelousness of this tiny, but beautiful classic caff for themselves.

Don’t be put off the by the incredibly uninteresting and uninspired name: John’s is actually staffed entirely by Italians so it’s always full of shouting, plenty of ridiculous hand gestures, and people being affectionately rude to each other.

it’s also very cheap in here. Visit at lunchtime and you’ll see queues snaking out the door and down the road, because the people at John’s (one of whom I’m assuming is called John, though I’ve never heard that name mentioned) know how to create a loyal customer base: serve good sized portions at a reasonable price. It’s not rocket science admittedly, but you’d be surprised how many cafes in this area try and get away with adding a few quid to the price of a sandwich just because they used some pesto or something similarly ‘exotic’.

John’s doesn’t have any such pretensions…they barely have any furniture so pretensions would be a bit of a stretch! Just go, plonk yourself down (if there’s room) order a bacon butty and a cup of teas and experience London cafe culture as it should be. Perfect!
