Gentrification, ho!
The evolution of the Divisadero corridor’s been interesting to watch. Mostly out of disgust, watching people move in and call it “NOPA” instead of its gang violence-affiliated real name, the Western Addition. Of the fancified additions to the neighborhood, though, Falletti’s probably the only one I consider a godsend.
First off, those miniature shopping carts are adorable. I want to put a couple of tennis balls on the rear castors so I can look like an old fart with a walker.
Secondly, the meat and seafood counter is impressive for such a small space. In fact, the whole store is impressive for a relatively small amount of real estate.
Third, there’s the produce section. I instantly fell lin love when I saw baby artichokes and a good selection of beets. Really. I love artichokes and beets.
Fourth, there’s the small foreign foods section, including half a shelf of old Brit favorites. I got my teabags, my blackcurrant and apple juice, and brown sauce. All without having to leave my 1.5 mile shopping comfort zone.
Finally, the beverages on offer. The wine selection’s pretty decent (albeit overpriced) but more importantly, they carry all the little beverages like young coconut juice, Abita root beer, as well as all the delicious crap I can never find at most markets.
On top of all that, they make sure that along with the cool, gourmet stuff available, there’s the mainstream junk that I’m not too snobby to buy. Namely: Cheetos. Yes, they carry Cheetos right next to the funky organic potato chips. It’s like this place addresses the duality of my nature personally.
