I prefer bus to train day trips from Madrid; cheaper, clean, and cozy. Go to Toledo, Segovia, Avila, El Escorial (only monastery there but great). Every place was fabulous. Madrid is breathtaking. Buy 10-ticket books for public transportation in Madrid; 6.30 Eu vs. 1.50 each ticket. Metro is super simple, better than Paris metro; all new trains, etc.
Many bars serve tapas with your drink, so buy a beer or coffee and ask for 2-4 little plates of dif. tapas (dif. side dhishes); it was enough for me to fill myself with 2 drinks and 3-4 plates included for 1.75×2 Eu per drink; it was my dinner. try that elsewhere in Europe. Bon voyage.
