If this is half as good as it looks, I’ll be visiting Derby next year! What real ales do you get here?

Had a Navigation pale ale and a vegetable balti. Both were delicious. I was surprised to receive chips on top mind you (on top of the curry obviously, not the pint).
Great old pub. Usually quite busy. Serves food and standard bar menu with snacks.

I was wandering around looking for somewhere to eat and I was intrigued by the strained glass windows and the claim to be Derbys oldest pub.
I am glad I went in out was great food and great atmosphere. The bar staff were friendly and service was quick. Can’t recommend it enough!
P.S. It is not part of a chain it is privately owned.

Went in this pub in the day and there wasn’t many people in there so we got served very quickly. Drinks weren’t too expensive, the staff were very friendly and chatty and the whole pub was very clean.

Yeah its alright, I'd like to eulogise but its alright, ok, not bad, better than the average, good but not brilliant.
From apprearances sake it looks like the mutts testicles, beautiful 16th century beams and heavy stone flooring, nifty windows as fragile as a matchstick cathedral, nice sturdy outdoor area, cosy seating throughout, fantastic fireplaces (especially in the back room). Good location at the top of Irongate and near the Cathedral, its mentioned in the Lonely Planet which must help bring visitors.
The food is very good and the beer ain't 3 bad (although the variety of ales isnt exactly regularly changing), the female staff are very good, the male staff range from dippy and tall to obnoxious (especially if they wear glasses and spend more time chatting up their fellow barmaids than serving customers!!)
The quizzes are well run and the beer festivals (ran from a small bar outside) are fantastic and eagerly received, a real highlight for the pub and very popular.
The Dolphin should be brilliant, it should be 10/10 but its 7.5 maybe 8/10 which isnt bad but its not brilliant

One of the best pubs in the country, never mind just Derby. Friendly staff, real fires and great real ale. Great real pub.

Excellent, great ales, comfortable, lack of dodgy people despite its city centre location.

The oldest pub in Derby and some of the best food and ale around. This place will still be going in another 500 years.

A fabulous, old, historic and traditional pub - Some real ale too! Spent an hour here with friends as part of a crawl. It was quite busy but deservedly so. Would visit again when next here.
Oh and I'm sure I saw it featured on tv's "most Haunted" series.

one of the oldest and still the best

I like this place because it is what I look for in a pub. Not unreasonable prices. Comfortable and fairly rustic. Good food. Open fires on a cold day. Because of this it is where I like to take people for a sneaky but intimate drink.
It is fairly small though and because of this I sometimes I feel like I’m being a bit of an idiot for talking too loud and animatedly waving my arms.

Lovely traditional pub in the Cathedral quarter. Nice atmosphere, real fires and cosy little rooms. The food served is traditional pub grub but the prices are very reasonable. Large beer garden/smoking area at the back.
Makes a welcome change from all the chain/theme pubs!

This is a great little pub. The selection of real ale is excellent and the food is also good value for money. The place is quite small, but if you can manage to get a seat it’s a good place to have a pint or two. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and the staff are friendly - never takes too long to get served either. This wouldn’t really be described as a young persons pub, and is very traditional.
The beer garden is a nice place to sit out in the summer months and it is also well placed for visiting other real ale pubs. The pub has a really nice feel to it, and would definitely be recommended to those who like a quieter, more traditional pub, with good real ale.

This is a really great pub with lots of character. Located in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter this pub dating back to the 16th Century serves a good selection of real ales. The food is also excellent which you can either eat downstairs, or upstairs for something a little more formal.
The beer garden is excellent when the weather is nice. The staff are really friendly and the atmosphere very relaxed.. just watch out for the ghosts that allegedly haunt the cellar.

The Dolphin is a lovely place to go for some social chit chat, and despite rumours that it is haunted it has a very cosy warm friendly atmosphere.
It is one of Derbys oldest Pubs and it shows by the tudor architechture on the noutside and inside the pub.

I like this place. The food is homely and it’s a good place to meet friends for a chat and a bite to eat. The real ale is well cared for.
