Allow me to geek out for a moment.
You know what drew me into Time Deli? The prospect of a perfect Reuben sandwich? The comforting warmth of a bowl of split pea soup? Wrong.
It’s their sign. Their sign uses the Chicago font. That’s right, the same font that showed up throughout the Mac OS up through System 7. On either side of “TIME DELI” written in Chicago, they have icons representing sandwiches and salads. Blocky, could’ve-been-drawn-in-ResEdit icons! If you’re a Mac geek, you can appreciate the simple beauty of it all. If you’re really a Mac geek, you’ll remember there was an icon garden at Apple dedicated to sculptures of these 32×32 pixel works of art.
Sadly enough, ResEdit, Chicago, and Clarus the Dogcow (Moof!) have all gone the way of the floppy disk. But Time Deli hearkens back to those simpler times, by offering simple deli fare without the frills and BS found at today’s lunch joints.
The spacious restaurant allows enough room to lunch with your fellow geeks without bumping elbows. The gigantic deli counter plays host to all the classic deli favorites, so you can simply pick out what looks best to you. There are no pretentious breads or dressings, no cheesy themed combos based on big city delis. Just good, straightforward sandwiches made to order.
And for the record, the split pea soup and the Reuben I tried were, indeed, excellent.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to see if I can get my old portfolio off of this SyQuest disk…
