I can't really explain why I love Alter Ego so much. I've been to their Poptastic night three times now, and it was great every time, whether a Tuesday or a Saturday …
So where do I start. They have the friendliest staff ever, especially the doormen, which was surprising. The entry is a bit pricey with £6 on a Saturday (I think it's cheaper on Tuesdays though), but worth it. Drinks can be quite cheap with Carlsberg and alcopops starting from £1.90 I guess. It's always crowded, even when I went on a Tuesday, and open really late. It has a large dancefloor with the most cliché pop tunes on (Kylie, Madonna, Gaga, the whole show), and a slightly smaller indie floor where the music is a lot less predictable (you can get the likes of Florence or even Arcade Fire, but if you're unlucky they might play Blink). Though I'm an indie geek I always seem to spend more time on the pop floor because it's just more people and more fun. I usually hate dancing to anything mainstream but this is so 'bad taste' it's good again. The crowd is mixed, meaning there are straight people around as well, and it's always a good place to pull no matter what your exact orientation (meaning, I have been hit on by people of either sex here).
Overall, it's a great atmosphere, and as long as you don't get scared by finding the girls' rooms full of boys fixing their makeup in the mirror, you should give it a try.
I saw a gouges girl/boy in alter-ego tonight and would very much like to see her again. 14/01/11
I hate Poptastic, but I always seem to end up there. Perhaps it's because it's got an indie room - unusual in the gay district - although the cheesy pop side is much better. Sticky floors, alcopops, heterophobia and a nasty grey colour scheme. Depressing.
I remember this place when it was still called Mutz Nutz. Poptastic is the main reason to go here, a camp cheesy night for bopping around to. Great atmosphere, never seen anyone in here with a bad attitude. There’s usually a cheap drinks offer on so its not an expensive night out. Not sure if they still do it but they used to serve tequila slush puppies, brrrriliant!
ya its good on a friday but im finding it hard to get in on sat as the door men keep telling mr i need a pass to get in ive surched web but no mention of a pass to get in on sat can any 1 help plz ty
poptastic is my absolute favourite night out … camp cheesey music, all ages, cheap drinks and just the best atmosphere for a fun, anything goes night out … can only agree with the first post .. go .. .you’ll have a great time … and yes it’s a gay night but very straight friendly!!!!
POPTASTIC!
my absolute favourite! held every tuesday and saturday at club alter ego located just on the outskirts of the village, it’s absolutly amazing. not to mention the overly keen “door whore” kitty lashes, who’s everyones favourite. often found circling the club with a pot full of ice pops to cool us clubbers down!
poptastic has 2 rooms, the first: cheesy pop, playing everything from kylie and britney to aqua and take that. and the second, the indie room, playing anything from peaches to paramore and MSTRKRFT to M.I.A for all the electro lovers out there. the drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is amazing and the music is raving! an absolute top night out, i’d recommend it over and over again to anyone looking for an amazing time! DEFINATLY DEFINATLY CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!
Went to Poptastic night for a birthday night out…...superb! Got home at 5:20am next day, which says it all realy!!!
