One of Brighton’s premier drinking holes, tucked away from shoppers and day trippers on Middle Street. Inside it’s dark, with wooden walls and furniture, lots of sofas and comfy seating, and downstairs you’ll find more seating and another bar.
As mentioned elsewhere on the web, the food here is pretty spectacular, with the Sunday roast holding the crown for many as the best in town. I’d like to try the veggie one described below, not because I’m a vegetarian, but I am a professional cheese fiend so a cheese filled Yorkshire pud sounds like heaven.
The only qualm I have about this place is that the music is incredibly loud, making it impossible to have a conversation at normal volume.
I often end up in the Globe when wondering the Lanes I can’t decide where to drink. Its a pretty old and traditional building, with a nice friendly youngish vibe going on. They have great Sunday roasts, the vege one is the best I've had in Brighton (a Yorkshire pudding stuffed with cheese!).
They have secret seating downstairs in the basement if it looks too busy and its so close to the seafront and the Lanes that its a must on any crawl through that area of town.
Pub near the seafront in Brighton. If I remember right the place was once called the Squid and Starfish.
The main bar is on the ground floor. There’s also a cellar bar area with comfy sofas etc.
The music is a little too loud for me (so I don’t come here often), but it seems to be reasonable quality stuff. I’m actually here now, but only really to use their free wifi (provider is Loose Connection, so no password required).
Food menus are in cheesy old album covers (Barry Manilow, Richard Clayderman etc.). Examples as at July 2008: grilled
mackerel fillet £5.50, sausages & mash £7.95, steak + chips + salad £10.50.
They have a couple of real ales on. Harveys was £3.00 (July 2008), and in good condition.
The toilets (downstairs) are OK for a pub.
