Lived in Newark for a few years and one of the first things you learn is the pubs are NOT nice.
The Rupert is a lovely change. Housed in a medieval building and very well renovated, it has lovely decor and is actually very clean (a surprise for any pub in Newark). The landlords are always around and are quite friendly. the pizzas are really nice (the rest of the menu looks good too) but the menu is a bit pricey for the area.
The drinks are a bit pricey but there is an excellent wine choice and a very educated choice of real ales (Tony the landlord knows his stuff).
The staff is very friendly and helpful.
