This restaurant is an absolute insider tip in that area in Hamburg. Was recently on a business trip to Germany and also had a stop over in Hamburg. U know, when u fly over from Asia (I live and work in Beijing, PRC) its particularly interesting to enjoy local food. However, I can tell you that latest after one week of that sumptuous Kalbshaxen and Preztels and Saussages etc. man u start craving for something different. And I guess Italian is always on the save side even here in Asia. Anyways, to cut a long story short, I asked the Concierge to recommend me sth and he pointed out this place to me. When I arrived I first thought “Where the hell did that smug sent me to”. But don’t let yourself get intrigued by the facade. Man once u enter, that place is going on and on and on!!!! And at the end there is this huge back are garden place. Its massive. I seemed to have arrived right in time for one of the last soccer matches of the soccer team that they are showing there, the Hamburger Sports Club (or whatever the name is). The place was packed!!! It was unbelievable the atmosphere that they had in the restaurant. The people where like as if they r sitting right in there in that arena and where singing songs and stuff. was very impressive. The people sat outside on a terrace like structure around the wall and the whole garden area and inside was packed. They asked me if I would mind sitting with someone at the table as they didn’t have anymore free tables anymore which I of course accepted. Immediately got greeted by my fellow “table mates” that night and once I had my beer (which came amazingly fast considering the other min 150 people with me in that room that all seemed to want beer!) we said cheers and I was immediately converted to a Hamburger soccer fan! It was great fun. They played well and soon after enjoying the soccer game I received my food which came also super fast considering how much guests they had. The food was exceptionally good I have to admit (which might be influenced by being sooo used to German food that a simple Pizza is just amazing;). No seriously, the food was great. Thin crust, great toppings, sauce super flavor and great melted cheese. Taverna Team, well done!!! Two thumbs up. What was even more impressive was the finishing of that evening. After the game was over, there were like 20000 people (at least that’s what it felt like!) that streamed to the front to pay with the Chef himself. His name is Socrates and he truly looks like a Greek man. Full beard, strong knows and edgy face (was immediately reminded to the guy from the movie 300 king Leonidas, even though Socrates established a slight belly over the years after the fighting against the Persians:) anyways him and his wife are great. they immediately smiled at me (which is completely not understandable how someone can still be smiling after running around serving all these people) and immediately recognized that I wasn’t from Hamburg. So we started chitchatting and they really took a great deal of time in asking me how everything was and how I liked it and where I was from and how China was. It was great to chat with them and they even invited me for an Ouzo. After finally finishing of that Greek delicacy and settling my bill i was not willing anymore to leave that lovely place. Thus my feedback:
Taverna Team, and especially Socrates and his lovely wife Christina you get two thumbs up from me. Well done. It has been an amazing evening and i loved the whole experience. Its not exaggerated if I say u guys made my day that night and I would have definitely returned if i would have stayed longer in Hamburg. But I can tell you the next business trip I will come back for sure and just hope that there is some soccer again:)
For everyone else, I can only say if you ever happen to come to Hamburg this place is a MUST. You have personalized service where people care for your every need and try to fulfill all your wishes. You will get lovely attentive service, great and huge food portions and sumptuous drinks for very little money. Definitely worth every dollar u spend in the restaurant.

An interesting place. From the outside it looks like an average-to-bad italian restaurant - i mean what’s going on with that scrolling digital display?! Anyway, once inside things get immediately better, and if you’re there to watch the football in the summer they get even better.

Way out at the back there is a large courtyard area which is perfect for watching sport. I was there for a recent HSV game and people were sitting all around and all up a terraced part around the back wall. I was shocked by the amount of people that they could fit in, and the atmosphere was great.

Props also for the service not suffering from so many guests. I was able to get table service for a beer within a minute or so, and they even brought my pizza quite quickly!
