Review of Reebok Sports Club from 8 February 2013
Reebok used to be a great gym, I go there for about 6 years, but unfortunately the changing rooms / showers are getting worse every year, while the gym is getting overcrowded making it almost impossible to train during the peak hours.
There's pretty much no air conditioning in the changing rooms, they stink dump mixed with all the aerosol sprays that members use excessively. Instead of installing proper ventilation, Reebok added more sprays under the mirrors that spray some stinky chemicals in the air creating visible clouds. These days I often have to hold my breath while walking through the changing rooms. I have even mentioned this to the management, but the response was that "chemical air sprays freshen up the air". I guess they don't really understand what "fresh air" means.
There're 3 scales in the changing rooms are off all the time. Often I try all of them and get something like 77kg, 78kg and 78.5kg respectively as the same time on their 3 scales. Again, I have complained to the management, but they couldn't care less.
The sauna and steam room are small but nice, unfortunately it's almost impossible to have a cold shower after the sauna because out of 23 shower cubicles only 2 have proper cold water.

Reebok is usually overcrowded during January and February, but this year it's especially bad, and the new members they keep signing up treat the gym as some kind of a leisure centre, totally unwilling to share any equipment even during the peak hours. A few times when there were no free benches/racks that I needed I asked if I can share (which is a normal thing to do in any gym), and while most of the gym clients had no understanding of such a concept, some of the responses I had were just amazing. Such as "P@ss off, I have a bad hangover" (from a guy on a benchpress), "Yes, I need both, the lifting rack and the bench (5 meters apart) for the next half an hour (during the peak time), and I can't share".

    Dear Digiway,

I am sorry to hear about the experiences you have had. We do take all feedback very seriously and rest assurred i will take it on board and action accordingly.I have also provided some updates/responses on your comments-

1-Our showers and changing areas are maintained and cleaned to a high standard-i know as i complete the audits myself and we always strive to improve. I will investigate further your comments regarding improving air circulation-the air freshners we provide are fairly standrad and are on timers so are not constant. May i also advise that we are shortly embarking on a full refurbishment of the changing area later this year/next year so our members will have an excellent new area.

2-I have weighed myself on the three scales in the men’s locker room this morning and they all read the same amount. These are servcied perioidically so if they do vary we can action ASAP.

3-Our member numbers are actually fewer than last year and we have considerably less members than we did 5 years ago so we are not in any way ‘widely subscribed’. Our annual promotions in January are no different than we have been doing for the past 9 years and are common with what all clubs do when our prospects are focussed on starting a new fitness routine in the New Year.

4-We have recently fully reburbished our Spa, are currently refurbishing our Restaurant, have invested in new fitness equipment on level 4 and will shortly be refurbishing the whole club. I hope this demonstrates how we are continually investing in our facility and servcies for our members and it is not ‘all about the money’.

5-I train myself during peak time to monitor ease of using equipment and have never had such rude experiences from our members. Most are happy to share so this suprises me, but i suppose can happen. Our fitness team can provide you with alternative exercises or if members are particualrly rude please point them out and we will address, as this is not the conduct we expect.

If you would like to disucss any of my responses privately i would be happy to meet and run through, as i wish all of our members/ex members to have a pleasant experience at the club.

    Best regards,

    Managing Director

The most luxurious Gym I have ever been in. It has 2 levels with different exercise machines on different muscle groups, climbing wall, boxing ring, large swimming pool, two separate types of saunas for men and women. All type of classes as boxing and kick boxing are available. Additionally there is a separate SPA saloon over there.

The reebok gym is one of the better gyms I have been too but very pricey. Great if you are going 4 times per week but too much if you are a twice per week member.

Great range of classes

I was a member of Reebok Sports Club in 2008 and at the time, I found it excellent. Great facilities, good classes, and a lot of super fit people. Reading the recent posts, I doubt it has deteriorated to a 1 star very VERY much.

However, as my review is based on past experience, I would say it is certainly possible to use guest passes to give the gym a go and see for yourself. At the time, I visited a few other gyms but Reebok was second to none at the time – cleanliness, excellent facilities, friendly staff, non-threatening environment, spacious etc. Wonderful gym. You definitely pay a bit more, but for me, it was completely worth the cost.

I wouldn’t hesitate to join it again if I was again in the proximity. Here in Vienna where I am currently staying, I run a lot, do yoga vigorously, and also treat myself to very nice alternative health treatments like Shiatsu and TCM massages – and I do really love that paced style – but sometimes I also do miss just having state of the art, clean, efficient facilities like I had at Reebok Sports Club. Anyway if you are interested and don’t mind paying a bit extra for a good gym – I’d say just try it yourself, enjoy and stay fit!

As most people have commented, this is a fantastically we equipped gym. Sits on the 2nd,3rd and 4th floor of Canada Place in Canary Wharf (above Waitrose home and food), with windows overlooking Canada Square so well lit.
I tend to stick to free weights, so here's a rough of inventory of what's there:
1 x Power Rack
1 x Squat Rack
Olympic Platform
Kettlebells area (with punchbag)
Hammer Strength Deadlift/Lunge
Hammer Strength Chest Press
Hammer Strength Incline Chest Press
Hammer Strength Decline Chest Press
Hammer Strength Shoulder Press
Hammer Strength Iso-lateral Row
.. another Hammer Strength machine for some kind of shoulder press/squat combo that I never worked out!
Seated Calf Raise
Standing Calf Raise
Smith Machine
3 x Flat Bench
2 x Incline Bench
1 x Decline Bench
2 x Shoulder Press
2 x Hyper extension bench
2 x Cable Pulldown machine
2 x Assisted dip/chin machine
Dip/Chin station
2 x Technogym Leg Extension
2 x Technogym Leg Curl
Technogym glute kickback
Technogym Chest Press
Technogym Shoulder press
2 x Leg press machine
2 x cable multle station
Cable crunch station
Hamstring extension station
Magnum Bilateral row machine
Magnum Lying Leg Curl
Magnum Chest Press
Magnum Incline Chest Press
Magnum Leg Press
Magnum Shoulder Press
Magnum Tricep Extension
Abductor/adductor machines (pointles but I guess someone likes them)
Magnum Chest/Reverse delt machine

.. the list goes on

There's plenty of dumbbells and barbells from 2kg up to (I think) 50kg. I guess there 6-8 free standing benches around the place.

A previous review said something about having to queue to use equipment. If you have to queue at the Reebok you seriously lack imagination - there's generally at least 2 or 3 alternative stations for performing any given exercise.

The pool's good, trainers aren't too intrusive. You get to see the occasional celeb (well Graham Norton and sometimes Dizzee Rascal). Loads of cardio equipment. The only classes I tried were the ab classes which were pretty challenging.

Changing rooms are spacious and plush. You don't need to bring in a padlock for your locker; they are operated by a PIN code that you set yourself.

When I compare Reebok with the similarly priced Virgin active gyms in the City of London, Reebok comes out way on top. If I'm honest it's about the only decent thing about Canary Wharf. If I have to take a job in the wharf again, I'll be rejoining. I wish they would open a branch in the City.

Hmmm looks like this review is left by an employee perhaps a manager of the Reebock I mean look at all the detail to hand cut and paste eh..

Perhaps someone will post something on you tube just to prove what a dump this place really is. Staff from all over canary wharf enter via the side doors (the grey metal doors ) including security guards, cleaners, restaurant staff not to mention the people who claim to be visiting the physio or the spa but who seem to use the gym for free instead. members only your are having a laugh mate

  • mrdoney, 6 July 2011:

Cut and paste? You do me a disservice. That was all from my memory (and with a little help from Jefit on my phone). I wish that gyms would give a list of the equipment they provide, it would save me a lot of time - hence the list.
I don't work the Reebok or any other gym. I'm an IT contractor based in the City, though up until last week I was based in Canary Wharf (which made Reebok local). I'm currently checking out some of the gyms in the City of London, so far none are of a similar quality to Reebok, though plenty are as pricey.

I have been a member of the Reebok for over a Year now and while the equiptment is good the changing rooms and showers are really grubby. The staff (who by the way can give out a lot of guest passes) have full use of the gym and locker room and by staff I mean not just fitness instructors but cleaning, bar and kitchen staff that work in the building not just those you might see around the GYM this means that you having paid your £95+ will have to wait for a piece of equiptment (free weights etc) or have to search for a locker or evern forgoe the steam room or sauna because it is being used by staff (who enjoy this as a perk) the work exclusive is not one to apply to the Reebok.

Written possibly by an employee of another gym? A bit suspicious given that a) they've only written 1 review and b) they seem to be talking about a totally different gym to the Reebok I've been to. You might occasionally have to wait to use one of the squat racks if you go in at peak times, but that's about it. The locker rooms are spotless, the best I've been in in the City or Canary Wharf.
When I work in the wharf, I try and go to the Reebok every day. I see pretty much the same people every day, so the 'free passes' comment doesn't ring true.

I was really nervous about joining a gym as I’d never been to one before and didn’t want to stand out as a newbie. I didn’t have to worry as there’s a real sense of space here so that you don’t feel too close to the person next to you. The equipment is amazing, there’s loads of it so I’ve never had to queue for anything even when it is really busy and there’s even a decent sized swimming pool. Also, when I joined I had a really good induction which gave me a program totally suited to what I wanted to achieve.

As others have said this is pricey but the facilities make it worth it. Also, you can leave at any time as you’re not locked into a contract, you can take a three month break if you don’t fancy it for a while and they give you free guest passes.

One of the best equipped and spacious gyms I have ever been to. As what has been written already, the price is the most prohibitive bit about it (my membership is £91 a month!) but it’s worth it.

All ranges of people go in here so you don’t feel put out as a newbie. It can be busy yet your personal space is not encroached upon, the machines and work outs available really do the job.

What a great sports club. You really cant fault it (except for the price which i’ll come onto later). Its a great location - no excuse for not going if you live or work nearby! I generally have to hold my hands up and say that i hate gyms, but this one made me change my mind. It is luxurious, everything from the changing rooms to the different rooms where you can do anything from spinning to ballet workout, is lush. The swimming pool is great - its not very often that it gets packed out and you’re swimming on top of one another.
The sauna and steam room are added extras.
The only downside, like the other reviewer pointed out, is the extortionate price. You would go far to find another sports club that costs more. I guess it depends on how often you feel you will use it and your financial status as to whether or not you think it is worth forking out for it.

Time Out calls this the most 'luxurious’ gym in London and Men’s Health voted it the best gym in the UK. It’s not hard to see why, but you do pay for that.

I have belonged to this gym for a year and love it. There really is only one negative and that’s the price. I currently pay £95 a month for my membership which is far more than any other gym charges. I go 5-7 times a week so I justify it by saying my 'per use’ cost is low. ;)

It opens at 5:30 weekday mornings which is a huge plus for me and the big reason I joined it in the first place. On Saturday it’s 8am and Sunday 10am. I believe they close at around 11pm during the week and 6pm on the weekend.

The facilities are fantastic. There are numerous cardio machines, boxing setup, free weights, weight machines, pool, basketball court, sauna, steam room and a rock wall. All of the equipment is in top-notch condition and there is rarely a wait to use anything. I’m probably leaving out a few bits, but you get the idea. They also offer lots of classes for members.

The members come from all walks and have all body types, so you don’t need to be a hard-core gym rat to feel like you fit in.

Lockers use a key pad you program each time so you don’t need to bring a lock. Towels are also provided as is the shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc. They have a shoe shine machine and ironing boards in case you have a meeting in the morning.

Really, I can’t sing the praises of this gym enough. If you enjoy the gym and don’t mind paying more to get more, you couldn’t go wrong here.

In regard to the gym members do they put equipment back where it belongs or do i have to run around trying to find things? Do they hog more than one piece of equipment? Do people spit in the showers? They do at Virgin Active @riverside and I don’t want to pay a premium for a gym where people are filthy and inconsiderate.
