Mespil Hotel is a good value hotel in Dublin 4. Room, hotel and facilities were all on-par. In fact, my only fault is with the location (which cannot be helped, I suppose)! It advertises itself as 'convenient’ to Dublin city centre, but in fact is more like a 30 minute walk to the edge of Grafton Street alone. My fiancé and I are young and fairly fit people and even we grew tired of the long hike in-between the sights of Dublin and the hotel.
However, there is a good bus service around 4-5 times an hour for only 1 Euro each way. The bus is the 10/10A and the stop is only 1 block from the hotel, so if you don’t mind bussing it, this vastly helps the location issue.
Our room was 1 large double bed and 1 single (which we used for luggage storage, haha), bedside tables, desk/TV area, little conversation area of a small table + 2 armchairs, ironing board, iron, hanging rail. The bathroom was a shallow bath + power shower. The room was clean & well-maintained by the servicing staff. The shower was EXCELLENT with wonderful water pressure. Our room was on the 2nd floor on one of the further-out wings, so we never had noise issues. There is one 1 over-priced vending machine on our floor & another for drinks on the ground floor. The lifts are large and light (and work well!).
We never ate in the hotel’s restaurant, but did sit in the bar one evening as it is actually CHEAPER than most in Dublin’s Temple Bar area. The service there was equally excellent & the atmosphere pleasant.
Overall, the staff were very helpful with answering our questions and providing advice. The Air Coach also stops fairly close by (maybe 10 minute walk?) for those who are not brave enough to take a normal bus (which is actually next to the Air Coach stop, so the walking distance is the same for a fraction of the price!!).
Overall, I’d say the hotel is excellent value for money considering its quality and levels of service, but its downfall is a faraway location. However, if you are a walker or don’t mind the bus, this can be a cheaper option for someone looking to stay in Dublin without paying inflated central Dublin prices.
