The atmosphere is really good. It transports you into the heart of Spain with many Spanish artifacts decorating the restaurant. Food quality is marvelous.

Normally San Miguel is an outstanding spanish tapas bar - the staff are extremely friendly and being all spanish (except the management) help. So on any normal day I would give 5/5 every time.

HOWEVER. Ask them to cater for 13 people. Ask them for the fixed menu and you're in for disappointment. The management could not care less the you were promised 6 dishes each for the price. In fact when I complain that we only received 30 dishes between 13 of us they did bring out a few more to appease us BUT we still received less than half promised. It would have been much cheaper and a better experience to order seperately. The lack of service as a group and lack of care means I probably won't be going back to one of my absolute favourite places.

Let down by the management
Adam

San Miguel feels authentic. Partially because it is unashamably Spanish, being full of genuine Spanish articles that seemed such wonderful exotic holiday keepsakes for our parent’s sideboards in the 70’s; and partially because it was full of Spanish speakers - staff and guests.
The menu was so extensive that had to get our iphones out and make a shortlist in order to knock some of the options off. Flaming Chorizo and spinach scramble were perfect.
Makes sure you ask for the churros that weren't on the menu.
Friendly service. Read the detailed review here...  http://blackheathcoffeeshops.wordpress.com/category/san-miguel-tapas/

Ambiance is good, waiting staff friendly.
i went twice in april and may, and the food was really nice well presented and portion for the tapas were good for the price of average £5 each.

I went back 2 days ago AND THE FOOD WAS REALLY DISGUSTING, I AM NOT SCARE TO SAY IT.
It was badly cooked, fat because of excedent of bad sunflower cooking oil, portion ridiculous, the lamb chop of very bad basic quality, not even cooked or seasoned, calamar tapas row, etc.
Their chef must be for sure the worst one or the worst paid  to serve such a s--t food.

The red wine bottle was hot also the glass for the water.
I paid £60 for 7 tapas and 1 bottle of wine and for sure they won t see me again

The owner should be a shame

Me and my Friends went for a meal at this restaurant. There was 4 of us in total. The tables had plastic covers which smealt very bad, the house wine was worse than vinegar and the meal was served cold with no flavour what so ever. I am very displeased as the money we payed was not worh it at all. I do not advise anyone to waste there time or money on this place , unfortunately i do not have a choice to give 0 stars and gave it one, but believe me it is not even worth that!

This place seems to have received a star too many. The staffs were pleasant and the atmosphere was alright, apart from the fake vines outdated decorations. The tapas however was really basic and looks like something that you would cook for your kids when you don't really have time.
The grilled king prawns were more like four tiny pieces of cooked shrimps in olive oil and some chili. The spanish sausage in brandy was just one ugly lump over a huge plate of burning liquor. Deep fried mushrooms were soggy tasteless mushrooms in cheap bread crumbs and what is suppose to be a red current salsa was more like canned puree. The presentation did not help make the food taste any better, no effort was put into it.

All I can say is that I have been dining at San Miguel for a number of years and always found the waiting staff friendly and accommodating. Also, despite some comments by others, I find the tapas, for the most part, as good as any I have had in Spain. The seafood is particularly good and this restaurant is the only one I have found to cook lamb cutlets exactly as I like them. Interesting wines too. On that front I note that they are organsing a tasting of Spanish Wines on 14 September 2009. How they are able to offer a tasting of 8 wines and and a buffet for just £30 a head is beyond me. I know a bit about Spansish Wine and at least one of the wines to be tasted retails at over £125 a bottle! Keep it up, San Miguel.

Awful, I don`t think these guys know the first thing about spanish cuisine. I asked the manager for padron peppers and he had no idea what they where. It was the usual unimaginative mix of chorizo and patato bravas and lots of heavy deep fried fish dishes. I only ordered a few dishes at the bar which I hardley ate before going for an Indian. I suggest the Brindisa in borough market for some proper spanish grub!

  • Sanjit Chudha, 14 September 2008:

Like too many Spanish places (so-called), the food is not what a Spaniard would recognise. Sadly too much (so-called) Indian food in the UK suffers in the same way - unimaginative staples smothered in generic sauces.

Have you tried Mar I Terra (there are 2 branches that I know of) - see my review.

Fantastic range of tapas that suits all tastes.

We ate here with a died in the wool carnivore who devoured the flaming chirozo and a vegan who certainly didn’t go hungry.

You can also have more traditional meals or hearty paella.

Reasonable prices but not the cheapest - exactly as you would expect in the tourist trap that is Greenwich.

Book a table at the weekend if you want to eat between 6 - 8pm but you can get a walk in after 8ish and mid week you generally are pretty safe to just pop in.

Bill includes a 10% service charge - the waiting staff don’t get a share and they work really hard so if you want them to have a tip get it taken off the bill and give it to them directly.

This Spanish tapas bar & restaurant was a delight to visit for its authentic Spanish cuisine and a wide range of tapas ranging from meat to veg to fish & seafood, the different tastes was delightful.
They have a wide range of drinks ranging from Spanish wines, beers, spirits, even a range of cocktails.
The service was excellent with advice on how many to order for a sitting and explanation on what they are and how it’s prepared.
