The Churchillian - The Pub on the Hill

Okay food, alright if you need a quick big meal, not particularly special

Great view, but book at weekends for the best views

Food and Beer, fairly standard pub food, the layout is a large room with a large bar, all centred around the spectacular views over Portsmouth and the Solent,

Service is good, staff are very friendly,
Prices are Ok, not too expensive, but not what you’d call cheap either,

Some of the tables away from the window are a bit small for the number of seats, more like drinking tables than food tables, but not really much room for criticism on that part, it’s a nice place to stop off and a bit of a change from the others down the hill. In fact we went up the hill because the main Pub in the boardwalk in Port Solent was so messy that we didn’t want to stay there, which is how we ended up finding this little gem.

I’ve actually just spent this afternoon at this pub! Good food but a little on the pricey side, but extra quick service. I’d doubt that serive would be quite so quick on a weekend, as this does seem to be a hugely popular pub! It does always seems to be packed out in the summer, which should tell you something!

Good range of drinks and food though, and lovely friendly staff.

Plenty of parking, an adjoining carpark and also one at the back, and also plenty in “Micks” carpark too (The burger van opposite!)

I can recommend this pub specifically for the view, on a clear day you can see the IOW perfectly and that of course means you can see the whole of Portsmouth too.

Perfect location, on top of the big hill where on a clear day/night you can see for miles! The pub gets packed out in the summer and many give up trying to get into the pub and use the burger vans aswell!

I’ve only given this fours stars because it’s been a few years since I went to the Churchillian. But, I organised a work’s night out there for Bonfire night last year (I couldn’t go in the end but they had a nice time!).

The menu was impressive - a very long list of various dishes, eg chilli, lasagne, fish and chips, roast dinners, curries, etc etc. Seemed to be a few vegetarian dishes too. And I have to say the desserts looked great! All at very reasonable prices.

On Bonfire night the place gets packed out because of the great location - from the top of Portsdown Hill you can see all of Portsmouth and across the Solent, and the IBM Fireworks display. Driving up to the fireworks can be a pain though, quite busy along one road, but worth it.

In the summer you can sit outside and enjoy the view. Worth having a look around the fort whilst you’re up there!

The Churchillian is a fairly large pub on the top of Portsdown Hill overlooking the City of Portsmouth and the surrounding area. On a nice clear day, it is lovely to sit outside with a cold beer and look out over the fantastic views of Portsmouth. It also is a spectacular view at night when Portsmouth is all lit up. The pub has its own small car park and there is also parking at the nearby viewpoint on Portsdown Hill.

The drinks are not cheap, but are about what you would expect for a pub in such a great location. The pub also serves food and children are welcome.
