    Have they reopened?
I was saddened by their closure announcement mid 2009.

I had been to Imbiss a few days ago and I can only recommend it to all of you who fancy a really good beer in a nice and cosy place. It is not too expensive and I will definitely come again.

Went on Sunday for lunch. Small place, no cakes (Weird for an Austrian place) ....but the variations of Leberkaese and sausages was excellent. Best of all: they have Almdudler! Might go back if I really miss Vienna again.

What about wines? Do they stock a good range of Zweiglts and Grune Veltiners? Sorry, I don’t drink beer, even though I love Austria…...

Sorry, didn’t check out the alcohol offering :-o Day time, daughter, bicycle…. besides, not sure it’s “gemuetlich” enough so you would want to go there for a glass of wine to unwind.

Just been to the newly opened Imbiss which is just off Edgware Road and Oxford Street and had an Austrian!

This is food traditionally served with beer in Austria and it’s very nice. They have all sorts of fresh breads such as pretzels (soft and chewy not rock-hard), Kornspitz and Kaiser beer rolls; different varieties of Leberkaese ( a kind of meatloaf); sausages such as kaesekrainer (with melted cheese inside) bratwuerstel and frankfurters; and desserts such as struedel.

We had a mixed platter for two which was £12 so that we could sample as much as possible and I was absolutely stuffed by the time we finished. We washed it down with the draught Stiegl Weissbier which, of course, went perfectly with the food.

This ain’t no theme bar, though. It has a nice chilled atmosphere in sophisticated decor. There is a bar area with a couple of tables on the ground floor and a larger basement which would be ideal for bigger parties.

It’s in a nice area which is just far enough away from the brash and bustly Oxford Street and Edgware Road so it’s ideal for taking a breather while you’re out shopping but it is literally just five minutes walk from Marble Arch.

I would definitely recommend you go here if only to try out the Austrian beer food or the fantastic Austrian beer which is extremely difficult to find in this country and is far superior to the German/Dutch/Belgian tat that we get over here, sometimes.

Einfach Klasse!!

Hand pulled Stiegl? In the UK??? But surely the Austrians, being the most beer loving nation on the planet, with the strictest food purity laws, simply don’t see the point of exporting their beer, particularly not to England? Well Imbiss has changed Stiegl’s mind. Pilsner and WeizerGold will be available on tap, and they are both fresh and very tasty. I was lucky enough to be invited to a sneak preview of the restaurant, which doesn’t open until mid August. Beer is available in half litre or litre measures, in genuine Stiegl glasses. Seats are black benches topped with cushions, and downstairs there’s room for more, about 20 or so should you feel the need for an office party.
The menu is available from their website, and includes a variety of leberkase, kasekrainer (pork sausage with cheese inside), strudel, broths with sternchen, fritatten or griessknockerl and some very rich sounding desserts, all the usual sachertorte suspects. Of course things may change a little before the opening.
So if you’ve ever had a great Beer experience in Austria and want to repeat it in the increasingly exclusive, up and coming boutique road the Portman Estate is creating in Seymour Place, or if you just need a quick bite after shopping in Selfridge’s, this is the place to go. Ken and Uka are the perfect hosts, and I can confirm that the barstaff are female, gorgeous German speakers >sigh<
(there are uncomfirmed rumours bottled Goesser will be available. Watch this space)
