I had a delightfully serendipitous experience, the other day. Early evening, wandering down bustling Clarence Street, a bright new shop caught my eye. Thorntons was just re-opening, after a brief but effective revamp. I didn’t recognise them at all…
This new store is the first of five to open in the UK. Known as project Ruby, it’s bright, fresh, and very inviting. The counters are white marble, with tantalising display areas, each with their own distinct appeal: children, traditionalists, ice-cream lovers and sophisticated palates are all catered for. The feel is more modern, cutting-edge and deli-delights than olde world chocolate shop.
All their best-sellers, including the famous Viennese Truffle with its uniquely distinctive, antiseptic, vanilla edge remain but there’s much more. If you’re after a tailor-made treat and you visit between 12-2pm, you’ll encounter their in-house chocolatier who’ll proffer tastes and suggestions before creating exactly what you’re after.
I liked their cute chocolate animals, available by the piece and was intrigued to discover their Dessert Selection and Revelations both enticing to the eye and perfect as a gift, or for the sweet-toothed palate when all you want is a little taste rather than a full-blown portion.
Lakritze Viennese Truffle with its uniquely distinctive, antiseptic, vanilla edge -- I’d like to try that.
