Review of Porto & Fi on the Mound from 30 May 2011

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The staff were attentive and charming. We both found it hard to choose food because all the dishes on the menu sounded fantastic. It was nice that breakfast items are available all day on Sunday. We shared hummus with rose harissa which was really special, and then I ahd hot flaked smoked salmon with beetroot and rocket, which was sensational. Quiche had lovely pastry and was very tasty, and haddock goujons were very generous and good - though personally I don't like curly fries, which accompanied them. I had a Black Isle Red Kite beer to accompany which was sensational.
The decoration of the new restaurant is fun. I particularly enjoyed the way a safe downstairs had been wittily converted into a storage cupboard for ingredients, and the beautiful chairs which have grass or reeds set into their plastic.
The bill was smaller than I expected. We'd love to return if and when we get back to Edinburgh. Highly recommend!

Having been to Newhaven restuarant several times and loving it I was excited to be trying the new one on Mound....
It was a very busy Sat lunchtime and tho I expected it to be noisy it was almost impossible to have a conversation (same problem at Newhaven, dont know what they do with acoustics)
The portions seemed smaller too and no tablet with the coffee!! Think I will stick to Newhaven in future its more quirky too......

So Ive been to the Porto & Fi in Granton on the waterfront, and although there was nothing particulary wrong with it, it just didnt grab me and I felt a little like something was missing.. So when I was walking around The Mound the other day and saw that they had opened another branch my curiousity got the better of me and I couldnt help but check it out to compare the two..

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and it made up for what was lacking in the Granton branch. Its a huge space and it seems a little funkier than its counterpart - although being in the city I guess thats their aim. You'll find no yummy mummies in here more young professional looking for a drink after work or lunchtime meeting.. The interior is cool and very very clean which I loved and theres plenty of seating - catered for babies as well and fab window seating..

Theres a pretty good menu on offer with options like pork belly, chicken roulade or thai noodles as well as starters such as pitta with dips or breakfast all day sunday and till 12 weekdays.. Even though it was 5 to 12 I decided to be a little cheeky and order breakfast which there was no problem with and they were more than willing to accomodate..

It came out in less than ten minutes as well.. Ive never ordered french toast before and coming with bacon and maple syrup I was a little hesitant, how does maple syrup go with bacon? But it was really lovely.. A generous portion of bacon and the french toast was just on the perfect side of crispy.. really lovely and a proper substantial meal.. couldnt fault it. The service was fast and friendly and the food was lovely.. The prices are about right for this sort of menu and its not going to break the bank.. A lovely spot for a drink after work (they are open till 10 weeknights) or a long breakfast on the weekend. Love it.
