Review of Cockney Pride from 7 January 2011

I was general manager at the Cockney Pride from 1969 to 74. It was a great pub. I was also sorry to see it go.

philgold10 I remember being there in 1970/71 as assistant general manager (having taken over from Graham Harper) to the new general manager Kenny Campbell. Does anyone remember the parrot Charlie?

graham2011 The parrot "Charlie" was given to an Iranian lad who was the only one the parrot liked... Kenny Campbell was a good friend, shame he passed on so young. I went back as general manager later with David McLean as area manager. I never knew why they closed the pub, always brought in a lot of clients and made good money.

Yes I remember it well. I used to work there and when I returned to London last Christmas after almost 30 years I enjoyed going for dinner at what is on the site now The Criterion restaurant.

philgold10 The Criterion Restaurant has been there since 1873!

Review of Cockney Pride from 12 August 2008

Does anyone remember this huge underground pub which used to stretch from Piccadilly Circus/Coventry St. to Jermyn St.?

I got introduced to it by a British photographer from Farnham who worked for my hometown newspaper in Wolfsburg/Germany at the time.

Since then, I returned to Cockney Pride whenever I was in London (and while the pub was still around).

I particularly liked the fact that, despite the touristy location, Cockney Pride seemed to attract both Londoners and travellers.

My favourite Cockney Pride memory is an evening which involved a singing competition between British and Swedish soccer fans. In one corner of the main hall (which faced Jermyn St.) the Brits started singing their team's anthem. Close by Swedish fans countered by trying to sing their anthem with an even higher volume than the Brits. This happened shortly before the "Last Orders" call - you can imagine how the singing teams' volume increased by 11 p.m.!

[I wrote this under the influence of various songs by my favourite British pub rock duo Chas 'n' Dave. Some of their songs are available for download at emusic - here's C&D's main page at emusic.]

LeB60 I remember the Cockney Pride well, as it was where I met my wife in 1970. Such a pity it disappeared.

fundays I loved it and remember the pearly king and queen playing piano ( May be its because Ime a Londoner) and the whole crowd would be singing along, great times nothing like it now.
