Keep going back and looking. Its a different kettle of fish to Science and Natural History. Its about man-made artefacts.
The more knowledge one accumulates about the cultural context of these objects, the more interesting they get. Science will always be more vital, but 'decoration' speaks volumes about human beings and culture.
There's a coffee/snack area downstairs where you can sit in a ceramic tiled room that looks like the inside of a drag-queen Goddesses handbag - I highly recommend.
And remember - ITS FREE, free I TELL YOU. Where else are the galleries and museums FREE.

I've been living in London almost my whole life, but never have I visited this museum before and that was a huge mistake on my part. A friend of mine has a membership and was pestering me to visit it with her and finally a week ago I gave in. We spend the whole afternoon there and frankly it wasn't enough, so I went again a few days ago. They have a Hollywood costume exhibition at the moment, which is simply amazing. There are costumes from both older and most recent movies such as Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider-Man, The Iron Lady and The Artist.
Apart from this particular exhibition the museum looks simply breathtaking with the beautiful chandelier at the entrance, which looks like a big flower and the lovely little cafe.
A true find, even if it's not as popular as the other museums in London.

Timed entrance meant that the exhibition wasn't too crowded and the flow of people seemed to be just about right to allow you to dwell where you wanted to hang around or move on if you chose to do so. Many of the exhibits were completely unexpected and included some truly iconic costumes from the whole range and age of films. The care of presentation, with audio-visual discussion between directors and designers for some of the costumes, was truly outstanding. The collection was gathered from owners around the globe and I think it unlikely that such a gathering of amazing clothes will hapopen again any time soon.
If you haven't eaten in the V&A then make time to do so. It's choice, quality and price of food leaves many private restaurants in the dust and you wobn't get to eat in many finer surroundings.
The whole visit proved to be an enormous success and I feel truly remiss that this was my first (but certainly not my last) visit to this iconic museum. The hollywood exhibition runs until 27 January 2013 and if you have any interest at all in this subject, you will not be disappointed!

I probably don’t really need to review this place, as it’s so well known. So you can just treat it as a public declaration I guess. I love museums overall (they are my football/chocolate/ fill in your addictive obsession) but with the V&A only a lovely walk through Battersea Park it has a special place in my heart. Perhaps it’s the variety of the collection, perhaps it’s the beautifully designed (relatively new) wing, its wonderful cafe or great exhibitions. Oh well, let’s just say, all those things together make a rather good weekend trip any time of the year!

Historic experience. Worth visiting for everyone.

Little bit disappointed to be honest; but a fair few of the exhibition rooms – ie, the ones i wanted to visit – were closed. While the museum is stunning, its garden heavenly, and the standard of exhibits excellent, i’d have maybe not headed over on this occasion had i realised. The temporary Annie Lennox exhibition though, was superb. Again, as a sprawling, often glittering, world of arts and culture, and being free to visit, it’s a must see.

My most favourite museum and most frequently visited. A must do for all students studying art and fashion and for anyone curious about culture and beliefs of other civilisations. I recently visited the collection the Cult of Beauty which was excellent and previously the collections which celebrated 60s fashion and were sponsored by Miss Selfridge. Always excellent and worth investing in a membership.

The huge Raphael cartoons are worth the visit alone.
Not brilliant for young kids, but the amazing array of costumes kept my daughter entertained.

I've been meaning to go to the V&A for years now. Like a lot of the museums down Cromwell road. It's not that I don't want to visit them, it's just that they're miles away, and often full of school kids. And there's a helluva lot of museums in Central London as well.
But I wish I'd gone to the V&A years and years ago. I've been missing out on all sorts of interesting things. I only saw a few bits as I was walking through to the Member's room, but I like everything. I'm made at myself for not going to the exhibitions over the last few years, and I'll be sure to keep on eye on their goings on and come back very soon. Even if you live on the other side of London and don't like school children, it's worth the trip.

i think the V&A wins in a fight between it and the British museum (not that any one asked me who'd win) . I like it's variety, interestingness and top class food - the cast hall is my favourite and in particular they have some awesome Viking stuff. A great place to bring a date for the ultimate middle class pursuit of sketching old things!

One of my favourite museums in London.
Lovely new mediaeval section.Original
designed by a multiplicity of architects
inc Fowke who was appointed to design
the Natural History Museum next door, but died before he could do so.
I love to meet friends here & then walk to Chelsea Arts Club for lunch
reviewed elsewhere) Constantly changing exhibitions & some of the
best on permanent display. Researchers have access to some amazing
materials as I learned when I was doing my Textiles MA at St Martin's

If you have never been to the V&A before, then I thoroughly recommend you get yourself down there – there genuinely is something for everyone, whether your interest be textiles, architecture, traditional artwork, jewellery… They have enormous collections from a variety of cultures and eras, and also have temporary (ticketed) exhibits. And of course, very importantly, their gift shop and café are both ace ;)

Never underestimate the Victoria and Albert Museum. This is not a place you visit once. I have been visiting a couple of times every year for the past decade and have never failed to find interesting new nooks and crannies.
The permanent collection is a wonder to behold from international crafts through the ages, the enormous cast collection, musical instruments, costumes, furniture and much much more.
Delights I have discovered over the years have included the collections of reliquaries showing the bizarre lengths to which religious devotion will take people in artistic endeavour; an almost hidden room (that I have never found again) where you can try on a full hooped underskirt and build your own Crystal Palace with clear blocks; the magic of the tiled tea rooms.
The exhibitions are wonderfully curated. Never have I found the idea of Kylie Minogue's costumes to interesting, and quilts have never had such stories to tell as they did in the cunningly domestified setting created in the exhibition. However the exhibitions I find most enticing however are those that communicate with various parts of the permanent collection. Most recently I was totally bowled over by the 'Small Spaces' exhibition - the highlight for me was the plaster cast of a tiny collection of slum dwellings from India that was placed in one of the cast galleries, the dialogue created between the items in the room was really interesting.

One of my favourite museums in london. The fashion and costume rooms are the best.
You should also try the restaurant/tea room, it's set in a beautiful room.
Also, visit the shop for gifts, there are some great finds.

Hi Motty1984,
I was on a flying visit to London & tried to fit in all that I could in one day. Maybe next time as you suggest I will spend more time.
