A friendly welcome soon made us relax and having been shown to out table we were given the menu which is not your normal 'pub grub'. Wide selection of interesting food with steak a speciality on Wednesday nights.
The food was all freshly prepared and well worth the wait - excellent quality.
Reasonably priced wine list and superb puds - we will return

My husband and I visited the Wheelwrights last Sunday for Mothers Day with my daughter and grand-daughter. Our table was booked for 2.15 pm and the place was heaving, absolutely packed. We had a fantastic meal, my daughter and I had the open lasagne which was squash and goats cheese with a pesto sauce – I could eat that every day of the week it was heavenly, my daughter thought the same. My husband opted for the roast rib of beef and said it was really tasty, lovely bit of beef. We had chocolate fondants and bread and butter pudding for desserts which were also well above par. All in all (husband also said it was the best pint he had drunk for a very long time) we had a really enjoyable mothers day meal and we felt good value for money with quality ingredients, not frozen ready meals bought in like some pubs dish up.

Had a really nice meal which we both enjoyed, nice touch having the home made bread and home churned butter. Lovely homely country pub atmosphere (and just love the hops hanging from the beams!), all the staff friendly and helpful. My husband happy with selection of beers The pud was really delicious. Will definitely be back, want to have all three courses next time!

Nice. The pub is a lovely building inside. Beams, hops the lot. Could do with a little more variety with the music. I heard the same track 3 times, maybe others won’t notice this. Landlord and Lady are very warm and welcoming. Locals are lovely too.
Need more out and out hearty pub grub. Less specialist. More steak and ale pies and that sort of stuff. More platters and budget bar grub needed. Staff could be a little more enthusiastic. It’s good to have your eccentrics!
I’ve eaten there plenty of times. Never had a problem with the food.
Nice pub will definitely return.

Visited on Sunday Feb 19 as part of a Group for lunch. Despite having pre-ordered and most of us having light meals we had to wait about 25 minutes for our food to appear. I ordered Celeriac soup which just about covered the bottom of the plate and was cool so had to ask for it to be re heated. No bread was provided until we asked, then rather miserable ‘straight out of a packet brown slice’ was provided All this for £5 50 which in my opinion is appallingly over-priced and wonder how that can be justified. the rest of the Group were not impressed with their meals and none of us would feel inclined to go back. The staff were friendly but that did not make up for being taken for a ride

Popped in for sunday lunch and was not dissapointed, the food was fantastic and is well worth the 75 mile trip it took us to get there. Will eat there everytime return to Matfield.

First visit on a Sunday – the roast beef was stunningly good, and the beetroot risotto was exceptional. Already been back for a mid-week supper, and equally impressed by the food. I rarely finish a meal, but on both occasions I had to, it was that good. A really lovely friendly place, with good service. Pricing is good and certainly worth it.
Probably eating there tonight and later on in the week too!

The new landlady is very pleasant. Food is okay though a little overpriced, but service was extremely slow on both occasions I visited. The bar was also understaffed on both occasions.
