Waterstone's Chiswick

The staff shuts the shop earlier than the posted hours. It’s meant to close at 19:00, but try turning up between 18:55 and 18:59 – you’ll find the doors locked, the tills closed and the staff busy handling their end-of-day routine. I only cottoned on to this recently when I tried, twice, to buy a book after work. I rushed there one day, only to arrive at sharp 19:00 and find the staff outside locking up after themselves. Fair enough, it’s closing time, I thought. The next day I managed to get there four minutes earlier, and found the staff inside – but the doors locked. This got me to thinking – in order for them to be leaving at 19:00, they have to effectively close the shop before that. Granted, I was cutting it fine with my timings, but that can’t be helped, and surely a posted closing time of 19:00 means that a customer should be able to pay for something right up until 18:59:59? Or am I just expecting too much? Well, whatever, the book’s on order from Amazon.
