Went here to hear a 'folkie' style band. It was really hard to find & when i asked for directions nobody knew it or had heard of it. Walked miles the wrong way till i asked the right guy. Its one of the strangest venues i have ever been too. Not much in the way of refreshments but the staff were lovely & i won a bottle of pink champers in the raffle! It was a fun evening and i learnt about Cecil Sharp, who until then i had never heard of.
I was here last night for a meeting, and although I'd never heard of Cecil Sharp House before, I was pretty impressed by the main hall (all the more impressive when there's only six or so of you clustered around a small table in the middle of it) and the library.
The only folk society in London, the English Folk Dance and Song Society have been going for over a century, and they're still going strong, partnering with colleges, museums and other organisations to organise workshops, performances and events like this weekend's Summer Camp at the V&A.
About 5-10 minutes walk from Camden Town tube station, it can be tricky to find unless you're armed with a map and the patience to explore a handful of roads nearby. In our group of six at least three got lost, and the others took a few wrong turns along the way.
But once you're inside there's coffee, wi-fi, friendly staff (who know everything there is to know about all sorts of performing arts, not just folk and dance), and the bizarre shrieks and thuds of troupes and theatre companies in the rehearsal rooms downstairs. Sorted.
Cecil Sharp House is a hall near Camden High Street mainly used by the English Folk Dance & Song Society. I go for the Ceilidh dancing (like line-dancing but Scottisher) but they hold all sorts of dancing events and performances.
It's nothing special on the inside (or outside), and with the benches and lockers reminds me a bit of a school hall - except a school hall probably won't have a downstairs bar.
The Ceilidh dancing goes on for three hours and costs around £8 per person - same as the cinema and much more fun. Even if, like me, you slip over and can't keep up with the pro's (they'll be the ones wearing sporrans and kilts). The crowd is surprisingly young and there's loads of beginners.
Did I mention there was a bar?
