Pitches are owned by the traers and that is why Romford has better choice and has stayed the test of time when compared to other markets managed by the councils.

I used to work in Romford, Walthamstow and Ridley Road Markets. They were all strong markets in their day but nowadays I would only ever visit Romford. Forget the others.

Having shopped in Romford Market for almost 50 years I have seen a good few changes - some for the better and, thanks to the local council, 'one stop' supermarkets and changing trends, some for the worse.

Some things never change though, that being the good fresh produce available from friendly stallholders that never let you down.

Plenty of lovely fruit and veg that outlasts anything from the supermarket 'Finest' range.

Superbly fresh and best quality fish and shellfish, especially from Crosbie & Sons who've been there for generations (thank God the Crosbie's keep having sons!).

Wonderful quality meat from Wickendens and very good value for the shrinking purse these days.

Clothing is also very good value and caters for all ages, fashions and sizes.

The market has something for everyone and a trip is well worth it for not only the things I've mentioned, but haberdashery, arts, crafts, accessories, etc...

A nice, friendly market with plenty of choice. Quite a big one so you will find most of the usual stalls here, from shoes to lingerie to clothing and music. Plenty to see and a good atmosphere even if you’re not buying.
The market is open Wed, Fri and Sat and usually on a sunday nearer christmas.
The best stalls are probably the sweet stall and the underwear stall.
The one downside is the amount of people smoking which isn’t very pleasant when it’s very busy and the cold weather as obviously it’s outside!

Romford Market is really well known. Some users have commented that it has gone down hill lately but personally I don’t think I agree really. A lot of the market traders are real characters and it is nice to shop with them rather than with the big chain stores. You will mostly find fruit and veg here as well as clothes. It can get pretty busy especially at the weekend so you might struggle a bit with a baby in a pushchair as we did. Overall, it has a nice atmosphere and we are glad we came. We would certainly shop here again.

I really, really wanted to give the Market Place 5 stars but feel I can’t as it’s really gone down hill recently.

One of the largest markets in the South East it’s so popular that they actually run coach trips here!

The market is mixed and contains stalls ranging from clothing through meat, vegetables through CDs. Some stalls, such as the CD stall outside Debenhams or “Peter the Pleater”’s blind stall have been there for years. Others are newer.

The market stands on a cobbled area and is fringed by the shops and, more recently, some living accommodation.

The ancient St Edwards church provides a focal point and gives the whole area a rather historic feel.

Market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with the market place being used for car parking outside these times. Expect the market to be operational before 9am and to close up around 4pm or later if trade is good.

There’s an Eastend buzz about the place but it’s not what it used to be!

I have lives in Romford all my life and have seen the ever changing market place - even more so recently. The market is open on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and have lots of stalls, I would estimate about 100-150. These include fruit, clothing, electrical and practically anything you could wish for. I have been told that Romford market is one of the best markets around for a small town. They have fantastic prices and you can really grab a bargain. Definately worth a visit.

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Market Square of Romford is packed with over 200 stalls.
Now the credit crunch is on us, the market with its many fruit and veg stalls is seeing an increase in business, which can only help the ancient market, now over 750 years old, (which the sellers insist, is not the age of the fruit at the back of the stall!)
Well worth a visit on a clement day.

I feel that the market used to be a lot better then what it is now. They have done a lot of building work to the market and surrounding areas. You can get some good bargains, particulaly on fruit/veg, cards and shoes, but i dont reckon much of the clothing and the authenticity.

Romford market is a good varied market place. It has many different kind of stall and you find quite a lot a reasonably price items most of the year. Not open every day Saturday,Wednesday and Monday I seem to remember but lately they have been having a small farmers market in Sunday.

Also they have had some redevelopment of the market place and a few new buildings have gone up where an old in door market stood on one side. This makes the whole place look more attractive then the old shabby indoor market was. On sunday Market area turn into a large car park

Romford market is one of the better markets I have been to, the only problem is that some stall holders do not attend regularly so if you see something you should pick it up rather than wait to see if you can get it next week. There is a wide variety of stall and you can buy anything from shoes to curtains all at a good price

The Romford Market Place is one of those places…

It has the typical buzz that chm4135 mentioned. It’s a great atmosphere and I walking past the music stall which plays all those old tunes is really great.

The market is quite big, and I’ve found quite a few bargains on the electrical stalls.

A few problems I’ve noticed is that some of the fish stalls start smelling in the summer, but that’s to be expected really at a market.

Also there is a new Aldi that has opened at the Romford Market which is good for locals on tight budgets, but maybe not so for the local businesses

I used to like the romford market, but i agree also that it has gone down hill recently and i dont go often anymore. I just prefer to go to the shopping centre instead.

However during the run upto christmas there are some good offers in the market.
