We have been in business on the Crayford Road for 50 years. If our service was as bad as this person describes we would neither be in business nor be able to boast repeat business year after year. Also, why would we have been inspected at random by the Good Garage Guide and awarded an overall 97% for our business which investigates all aspects of our service and was one of the highest scores in the country.
Addressing each point, firstly, we cannot help but be confused by the contradiction that the cars were dirty and yet they clearly stated that on arrival they had to climb over the hose of a man washing cars. We are constantly cleaning and valeting our cars on a daily basis and for that we need water, hence the hose. It is a continual process that has to be done during opening hours.
Point two is that our Sales Staff arrive at 7.30am and do not leave until 7.00pm without lunch breaks. To then not allow a couple of cigarette breaks seems a little extreme.
Point 3.. If a customer is looking to part exchange a car and purchase a new one we would of course encourage our customers to browse for a particular car, which yes are locked for obvious reasons but can be opened in moments. Also, our valuation of your car can vary depending on the price of the car you are interested in. Our sales staff are very experienced at their jobs. They would rather ask a few questions about your car to gauge condition and mileage service history etc than miss quote someone.
Point 4 We service and valet every sold car before it leaves our premises and with regards to price we are considerably lower in price than many other car sales companies in the area. You can check this yourself by visiting our website on www.a1carriages.co.uk

They left me to have a browse amongst the cars and when I found a car that I was interested in they gave me the keys and again left me to have a look at my own leisure.
At no time did we feel under any kind of pressure unlike other dealers we had visited in the area.
Thankyou so much to Chris for all your help.
We will be definatley be back when we next need a car and recomend to anyone that is thinking about buying a used car to visit you.

I felt I was being told the truth about what could, and more importantly could not be done to the car I was looking at buying.
Time will tell if I am right about my feelings, but after two months I can say I am happy with my purchase.

On receipt of the vehicle and on closer inspection there were a number of minor things that I wanted sorted.
I emailed A1 with my concerns. And so far thanks to the help of Paul all of my issues have either been sorted or are booked in to be sorted.
So to date I cant fault the aftersales service received from A1 Carriages.
There are a few areas that A1 could improve on for sure. But I would not hesitate to recommend A1 to a friend/family at this moment in time.

My visit to A1 Crayford confirmed my preconceptions about private used car businesses – rude, unprofessional, dishonest and overpriced.
Upon entering their car lot, stepping over the hosepipe being used by a man to wash the cars, I walked past another man wearing an ill fitting suit and smoking, thinking he was a customer. After unsuccessfully finding a salesperson I went to the office and was asked what I wanted by the man in the suit.
I explained I’d phoned them earlier in the week and was told to bring my car to them for a part exchange valuation as they couldn’t give me a price without seeing the car. The man was uninterested, and told me to have a look around the yard to find a suitable car.
After looking at the outsides of the locked, dirty vehicles on offer, I went back to the office to ask about a valuation of my car. Rather than being invited to sit down, I was made to stand outside the office door and answer questions about my car to two men standing inside with their arms folded.
After what felt like an interrogation, and having no one actually look at the car, I was offered a price less than Webuyanycar.com for a dirty, overpriced replacement. and promptly left.
After that I went to a Ford main dealer and received the proper service I would expect.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my feedback. For avoidance of doubt I’ll clarify the points I raised:
1) Yes, someone was washing the cars, but the vehicles I viewed all had very dirty interiors, which I wouldn’t expect from being valeted on a daily basis.
2) Sales staff are the face of your business, and shouldn’t be smoking and taking breaks in full view of customers. If this was unavoidable, for example due to a shortage of staff, then at least acknowledging customers upon arrival would be appropriate.
3) Being made to stand outside the front door whilst two sales staff spoke to me from inside is pure unprofessionalism. Neither of the staff members would even look at my vehicle, despite my repeated offers. I don’t know how an accurate quote can be provided like this, as when I phoned I was told the vehicle would need to be seen in order to give a price.
For my vehicle the price I was eventually quoted, after a series of abrupt questions, was 30% less than a main Ford dealer and lower than even online quotations.
4) Regarding your other comments about being in business for so long, I have lived in Crayford all my life and prefer to support local businesses. I was extremely disappointed at my poor experience at your premises, but am keen to find out more about your high Good Garage Guide ratings. Online searches didn’t yield any results, so is it possible to provide a link?

I’d agree with Callum about this place being rude and dishonest. I visited today looking at buying a Focus. Over £1000 over the book price for an average condition Focus and and sales rep that told me all prices are fixed. The rep also told me the car was worth 4k, which is a total lie. I went to this place on a recommendation, but I will not be passing on that recommendation to anyone else.
