When I was in Sweden, we made a journey to Kiruna which is in Lapland, and the northern most town in Sweden.

We travelled by train and were allowed to 'drive’ the train, which consisted of having your foot on the 'dead man’s brake’. That is to say, if your foot came off the brake, the train would stop. I guess it was the 'go’ pedal.

We crossed the Arctic Circle just as it was sunny. Beside the track was a sign telling we had reached it. We didn’t see another elk after that, but still saw reindeer.

At Kiruna we were guests and enjoyed the great Swedish food I’d come to enjoy (but I won’t touch the rotten fish thingy). Lots of fil milk, cheese, yoghurt, and I love the tradition of fikke.

We saw the aurorea borealis. It is very different I think, from the ground rather than on a plane. It is always magnificent, and awe inspiring.

It was truly cold, the air cracks at times, and it can be startling.

I was sorry to leave when we did, it is a very special place.
