Review of The Electric Elephant cafe-Gallery from 2 February 2013
I'm lucky enough to have this cafe just a couple of streets away from my flat, and it's still one of central south London's best kept secrets.  If I want to impress a non-Southwark friend who imagines the Elephant as being vaguely on a par with Timbuktu or Kabul, this is where I take them for a civilised chat over coffee and cake.  Having said that, the whole atmosphere of this cafe is very informal, and that's part of its charm.

Louisa the proprietor is always most friendly and welcoming, and takes care to get to know her regulars.  I like the fact that I can head off to the Electric Elephant for lunch and never quite know what dish (or dishes) of the day she is going to surprise me with.  There are usually some interesting remnants of the weekend newspapers - or back issues of Private Eye - scattered around by way of reading material while I wait for my food (just one plea: please remember to bring the cup of tea to the table quickly, even if the food takes a while to prepare!).

In fine weather it's lovely being able to sit out in Iliffe Yard (the cobbled mews outdoor seating area), and the yard forms a remarkably peaceful oasis in the midst of the inner city.

Prices are generally very fair, and Louisa also operates a crafty loyalty card scheme...nine stamps for beverages bought and you get a free coffee!

A brilliant local cafe. My favourite here is all day breakfast as a brunch - the sausages and bacon are excellent, which I appreciate as a farm-reared boy myself. In fact, pretty much all of the food is thoughtfully sourced and rewarding.
Very informal and friendly atmosphere, so don't arrive expecting michelin star service. But then, you won't be paying michelin star prices - it's really not that kind of place and I really wouldn't want it to be.

I went there today for a meeting, after checking that it was dog-friendly. I had a lovely onion and sour cream tart and a cappucino in the cobbled courtyard. The folk there were very friendly and Lola-dog had fun watching all the huskies pass by on Crampton Street. It would make a great spot to hang out, so I'll definitely be back.

Although the service is friendly, its abysmal - on a quiet day for brunch, we had to wait over an hour to get our food order (and *only* 30 minutes to get our drinks) because the server (as sweet as she was) "lost" the slip of paper she wrote it on... and kept chatting with her friends. Its a nice enough environment, so if you have nothing else to do rather than wait ages for service (and, perhaps, bring your own drinks), give it a shot!

I can only apologise for this unpleasant experience. However, this is an exception, not the norm. Also it has improved further as we now have a proper waiting tables service. Louisa Cath, Proprietor.

This is a lovely cafe to be found near the top of the Walworth road. Serving fresh soup every day, organic pastries & bread for sandwiches - good range of sandwich fillings, salads, homemade cakes & the famous Borough Market chocolate brownies. Really good (fairtrade organic) coffee. It also doubles as a gallery exhibiting work by Pullens Yards artists.
