Probably everything you ever want in a chocolate shop. An amazing assortment of very tasty chocolate, chocolate models, chocolate drinks and even a specialist chocolate cafe.
I had the most decadent hot chocolate of my life in there upstairs cafe. For a hot chocolate I guess it a tad on the pricey side but hey I'm on holiday and given the touristy location it was to be expected. What I especially loved, and this is true of most of Europe, is that they don't add milk to your hot chocolate so it is pure thick chocolatey goodness, I must mention here that I am lactose intolerant so for me it's a huge bonus.
Yes the store's a tad touristy but it is definitely worth a visit and children will love it. Go if only to view the amazing Berlin landmarks made out of chocolate.
Touristy? Yes. Good fun? Yes!
Walked out with a couple of pounds of guilty pleasure...
Would go back.
Probably the most famous chocolate store in Berlin. Great chocolates!
Although it is increasingly touristy (it's on the Gerndarmenmarkt), Fassbender is one of the best chocolate shops in Berlin. They have a huge selection downstairs and a comfy cafe upstairs. If you have visitors, this is one place to take them. I love their hot chocolates, which are made with real chocolate and quite thick, and their delicate chocolate cakes. It might be pricey at 3 euros for chocolate and 3-5 for the cake, but it is definitely worth it. If you like Marcolini's of Brussels, then this is the place for you!
This place is famous but I think it has suffered slightly in becoming famous. That's an only slight suffering but if you have to choose, go to Schokogalerie first and if you have time, come here.
This is apparently one of the most famous of the chocolate shops in Berlin, being frequented by royalty and important posh people. Its name used to be synonymous with the highest quality in chocolate but it has suffered slightly. I say slightly because the quality of the chocolate is still better than somewhere like Bandy Brooks or Leonidas.
The chocolates on display are varied and vast and there is so much to choose from it is almost impossible to choose only a few. While the quality isn’t the best of the best, it is still very good and taking a box of these to a party – especially the petit petit dessert chocolates – will win friends on all sides.
This place is like the chocolate world’s Harrods, with souvenir chocolates, chocolates in all shapes and sizes, chocolate merchandise like napkins with images of chocolates, chocolate dishes, mugs with chocolate images, tote bags and more.
Upstairs is the café where you can relax, pretend to be posh and watch the people in the square across the way take photos and enjoy their day.
Definitely a place to hit on your chocolate tour of Berlin.
I agree with everyone, great chocolate shop and if there is anything i miss from Germany it must be the Rausch 75% Tobago chocolate.
What an experience that stuff is. I have been unable to find anything comparable in UK; I've actually pretty much given up eating dark chocolate, or any chocolate for that matter as nothing I've tasted over here even comes close.
nice chocolate place. lots of different tarts in the upstairs cafe. we had the mousse au chocolate and the tiramisu. both very delicious. price was 3,40EUR each. we went there after lunch at a good restaurant nearbz, so a good price for a desert. service was fast and good.
Very neat chocolate shop. If you like chocolate, this is the place for you. Check out the replicas of famous Berlin landmarks made entirely of chocolate. Then go and build your own box of goodies… if you can decide which ones you want. You get a free cheap piece of choclate with every purchase.
One of my favourite chocolate shops that I’ve every been to! My god, what rich and incredible chocolate they have. What an assortment too! They have a counter full of truffles and chocolate covered bits stretched all along the back of the store. Massive chocolate bars, chocolate carvings and models including the titanic and a chocolate volcano oozing liquid chocolate out of the top. This was a great shop and the chocolate was outstanding!
Though a complete tourist trap, my girlfriend -- an East Berlin native -- swears by their chocolate. They have a large selection (their own brands only, I think) and the huge, shellacked monuments made from chocolate are fun to see. Good place to take visitors if you’re near the Gendamenmarkt anyway; they can pick up an easy-to-transport souvenir for friends at home. Otherwise, there are lots of chocolate shops with more charm and greater variety to be found. There is a nice cafe upstairs, with yummy chocolate cakes and drinks, and a nice view onto the platz. Lots of purple and orange hair there (and not the punk kind). The elevator to reach the cafe is at the back of the shop.
Andrew S. One follow-up. Better to go during the winter. Germans don’t (as a crude generalisation) trust air conditioning, and prefer fresh air, instead (makes sense), so most shop doors are left open during business hours. The chocolate is a little less appealing when you see bees and flies all over it ;)
