Merle's Roti & Rum

Merle's is the sort of place I live for.  Unassuming, a personable and enthusiastic owner, good value for money, and absolutely delicious.

My beef stew (with Argentinean beef, not your normal supermarket rindergulasch) and my mate's chicken curry were both very flavorful, and totally different from each other.

As far as I'm aware, there is no other place in the city to get Roti.  I hadn't noticed until after ordering that Merle makes her own ginger beer, so I'll be trying that next time.  Note that this is not a budget place, but it is far from expensive either.  Main dishes start at around 8 euro. 

Be sure to try her homemade Trinidadian hot sauce, because it is HOT.  And I can assure you, I am a fan of the spice.  This is among the hottest I've ever tasted anywhere, Berlin or not.  She also had a green hot sauce which I liked even more, but apparently this is not normally available and was made from leftover ingredients from their 1 year anniversary party the night before.  I hope she makes it regularly in the future.

Either way, I will be back.

Yum yum!!! Delicious roti exactly like my family back home make it! And the chicken curry was great too!  Friendly service and good value - I would definitely recommend Merle's to anyone!

We were visiting Berlin from NYC and found this great new restaurant serving cuisine from Trinidad. Eating at Merle's Roti and Rum was like being transported to Trinidad. It had great island music and excellent service. The rum punch alone makes it worth the trip.  Don't forget to order the mango cheese cake...it was fabulous. It was a great value and we definitely recommend it to all visitors.  We can't wait to go back again.                    

          

Homemade Ginger Beer, fragrant curries, authentic Rotis, this place is awesome. A brand new restaurant near Mehringdamm that finally fills the niche for Trinidadian cuisine! I can recommend this find wholeheartedly: the service is charming, friendly, personal, you feel like you've walked into a home, not a restaurant. All the bright colours and plants inside cheered me up after the afternoon rain. The dessert, banana caramelised with mango ice cream, was very yummy. And it was very inexpensive. I can only recommend Merle's. Go!
