Review of Proud Cabaret Camden from 16 June 2012
I visited Proud with my friends of a performer who regularly shows at this venue. I was not impressed with the sloppy service and lazy waiters! IM from Italy and have standards when I eat out even if in Camden of allplaces too. Well I say thay the evening was tiring as I battled to get a decent level of attention from the waitress assined to us. The young girl was interested in pulling up panties and rejusting her breasts into her not well fit corset! The wine selection was Ok but he food let down even the nicest bottle we ordered. It Arrived late into the show and was embarrassing for the both us as we hadinks with the performer and thought we might have been wined and dined much more so. http://www.thisiscabaret.com/proud-cabaret-bans-performers-from-working-with-competitors/ I show support to my friends performers. I was shown me this which is related to Proud, is an interesting read and to perhaps why this venue is lacking in giving a great support to it's performers and also me the customer in a satisfactory evening out!!! Please try harder- the burlesque community love glitter and glam, delight food and entertainment but you dont care to give. Why when I have been other places, the food is speeded and hot with a sexy atmosphere??? The was no effort given and no sauce. For how much we paid £80 per person, I could be treated like the queen and not a cheap customer :(( Love London and the scene and will try other places instead of here now

Hi there, thanks for your feedback on your experience with us here at Proud Cabaret Camden. We were sorry to hear that you weren’t 100% satisfied with your evening. We have looked back into the comments made on your night and how we can move forward but without knowing the exact night you visited, it is difficult to find out what went on. We have put into place extra staff training to iron out any possible service issues and to ensure that the experience we offer is the best in London. At Proud we pride ourselves on the talent and excellence of our regular performers and atmosphere in the room. We would love for you to come back to try us again soon to change your opinions :). As you’re reading this, you’ve probably exhausted all options of entertainment that the Big Smoke has to offer, and regrettably believe that staying in the new going out and even Time Out’s ambition to make you think otherwise has become trivial. You’ve probably turned a blind eye to their Cabaret section, and wrongly so…. Cabaret is where it’s at, precisely and currently at North London hip venue, Proud Cabaret Camden.
There you will find your perfect night of decadence and hedonism, be it to mourn the end of your celibacy, to host a birthday party, or just for the sheer fun of it.
“Burlesque is what we do best”, claims the fearlessly raunchy compere, Vicious Delicious, before introducing a four- folded act of teasing eye-candy artistes, suggestively flaunting their curves to an eclectic soundtrack spanning James Bond themes and vintage 80s pop with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Nina Simone, Madonna and even the awesome Velvet Underground.
These showgirls, who all qualify for a bit part in the next Sin City’s cast, cater to anyone and everyone’s aesthetic tastes, from luscious brunettes Betsy Rose and Annette Bette to the Marylin-esque blonde bombshell Banbury Cross, via black beauty Coco Deville to the latex-clad Marnie Scarlet… Name it, it’s on show.
Expect pouts and stricken poses galore to the delight of the gents and the envy of the ladies, who no matter where they stand will be given no other choice than to let themselves get entertained. And prepare yourself to be drooling from anything but hunger as to accompany this cheeky revue, Proud Camden has called onto the expertise of South American chef Edwin Mendoza (here’s me having a dig at a press release but in all honestly this was by far the best fillet steak I had in my ten years in London Town!), who has devised a palate-tickling menu including treats such as beef bresaola with truffle mayonnaise and aged parmesan, and baked seabass fillet with sauté carrot and fennel on a coriander and red onion salad, among other delicious dishes, to be savoured with a large selection of vino, beers and cocktails a la carte.
All this in the revamped décor of the venue’s South gallery.
To Proud you go- disappointment is out of the equation.

Proud Kitchen is fun start to finish. When i went it was a nice amount of people filling the room and keeping things buzzy.
The show gets you laughing and has some impressive acts and amazing costumes and ideas.
We moved on to the club after which is perfect if you are in the mood for it.
I wouldnt go to the Kitchen if i was in the mood for a mellow night but it is perfect when want a proper night out with the girls.

You feel welcome as you cross the threshold of this cabaret themed restaurant. Set up like a 1920s/1930s speakeasy/circus; the dancers and performers keep you interested throughout the meal ~ there is much to meet your eye.
The menu is decent, a varying range of dishes on offer.
The staff are attentive and interested in their guests.
Unique atmosphere in the restaurant and the possibility to cross over into the nightclub after eating.
I returned within five days – highly recommended be you from London or visiting from abroad.

Friends and I ate at Proud Kitchen last week and had a great night. Restaurant had a chilled, rustic feeling with a good menu and decent prices. Service was prompt, barely had to wait to be seated and staff were friendly. These things combined to create a great ambience.

Went through to watch some live music in the club afterwards and
loved the experience of eating then clubbing in the same venue.

Definitely recommend!

Me and the Mrs went to proud the other night on a thursday and had a drink on the outside terrace before moving inside as we had arrived a little early. we were seated immediately to a harpist performing on stage, very nice atmosphere this created and we were relaxed ready for the promised burlesque event.

I have never seen a burlesque performance before and although i find it a little tongue in cheek we enjoyed the show massively, it wasnt detrimental to our enjoyment of the food which was above average, the entertainment provided though pushes the enjoyment of the night to the next level.

will definately be back soon, maybe even moving through to the club section which was very busy when we left!!

Went here with a few friends the other evening and found Proud Kitchen to be a perfect place to go, anytime of day. Its addition to the gallery/venue/bar means that there’s now a trendy and comfortable place to sit down and eat before watching a band or hanging out in the stables. We sat down to a great 3 course meal – which was actually really reasonable for the quality. A really good place to head if you’re in Camden – and if you don’t usually head up that way, it’s definitely worth the trip. Highly recommend.

I ate at Proud Kitchen for the first time last Thursday. We actually went for a quick bite before wanting to see a band later on that evening, weren’t expecting much. I arrived with a 5 friends and was greeted by a smiley host! As we didn’t have a reservation we were asked to wait by the bar. Moments later we were seated. We expected a quick light bite but it was such an enjoyable and social atmosphere that we decided to make an evening of it! We went for the 3 course set menu. There were 4 options for each course but suited all of our tastes. I went for the chicken Caesar salad. I don’t eat bacon (which was in the meal) but after telling the waiting staff this, it wasn’t a problem to not include it.
Of course great company always creates a good night, but when that is also partnered with fun staff, yummy food and such a lively atmosphere it’s even better!
Will definatley be back!

My experience of Proud Kitchen Camden was much like suze769's review below. Proud Kitchen should be Ashamed Kitchen and get their act together! Our waiter did the best he could but the place was total chaos.

We also went because we had GroupOn vouchers and were looking forward to a good evening. Issues:

1. Arrival: The reservation sheet listed only my surname, so as they couldn't find my name initially, it took about 5 minutes to sort and get seated.

2. Drinks: Similar to suze: Ordered 2 glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. Took ages to arrive as apparently no chilled bottles were availabe, and the woman who took our order was looking around for some. No one bothered to tell us this until we asked the waiter to chase it up. He arrived back with 2 warm glasses of wine and a glass of ice. What? The wine wasn't very good either, too acidic, no fruity taste whatsoever.

3. Food: My beetroot salad starter was good, but the mains took over 1 hour to arrive (from when we ordered). Other people seated at our table experienced the same or longer delay -- the couple next to us had been waiting 1.5 hours. The risotto tasted good but was very runny, a greenish slimy mess.

4. Dessert: Brownie ice cream was tasty, but we only got it after I waved furiously at the waitress carrying them to get her attention, as she went to the wrong table. I could see the people she was trying to serve shaking their heads, and had to wave, shout, and then bang on the table to get the waitress' attention. It was like a comedy skit, but not very funny in reality.

I am giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 as I think there is good potential here if management improves the food and service, but would absolutely NOT recommended going there at present.

I can only say that our dining experience was nothing for Proud to be Proud of, it was the WORST dining experience that we have ever experienced. First off the lady didn’t even know where to sit us and left us standing in the middle of the restaurant for a little bit, then she hastily stuck us on the end of a table with nothing laid out, no glasses no cutlery, such a bad welcome.
She never even came to ask us for our drinks order we had to flag her downv and then my boyfriend secretly asked her for a bottle of Moet to surprise me as this meal was to mark a very important date for us, after about 15 – 20 minutes she walked passed and plonked a bottle of unopened Moet on our table with no ice bucket!!! We never said anything at this point and just put it down to highly untrained staff; we then had to flag her down again to take our food order.
Our starter took ages to come out, and then our main took even longer to come, when it did my boyfriends fish was slightly warm on the outside and freezing like it had come out of a fridge on the inside, he feels it was cooked in the day and then put in the fridge and warmed up when needed only it wasn’t even hot, so we asked for it to be sent back and we received a replacement that my boyfriend never even ate as at this point as he was scared for his own health and well being eating re-heated fish we then had to flag someone down again and ask for our deserts, I also asked for an extra champagne glass and I was given a plastic one! Then a very drunk couple from the club wonders in and sits on our table and starts swigging from our champagne bottle and being annoying. By this point we just wanted to leave as did many of the other customers as everyone was complaining, we mentioned we wanted a refund as the whole experience from beginning to end was disgraceful but we were promptly told we wouldn’t be getting one and to go ahead and write a bad review if we wanted too, this is not the way you deal with customers,This booking was made on a groupon voucher and I’m sure they would be very unimpressed to know that they are supporting eating establishment that can’t even give the diner an enjoyable experience, we have and always do received better customer service in our local slug and lettuce and even in our local takeaway for that matter.

    Hi Sissy,

On behalf of Proud, I'd like to apologise for your dining experience in our venue.

There is no excuse for slow service or inexperienced staff, similarly there is no excuse for bad food. We very rarely receive complaints so when we do, we treat these extremely seriously.

In regards to the service, I have noticed the time at which you posted your review and it seems you visited the restaurant throughout a period of changeover in the team. At the beginning of February, our restuarant manager left the venue as did our chef. As you can imagine, this resulted in a great deal of upheaval in sorting out a new team. You mentioned that the staff seemed inexperienced? The chances are they were.

I can only put the poor food down to a similar issue. The chef we currently have in Proud Kitchen is Michelin trained but for a period before this, we had temporary chefs who may not have been serving you as best they could.

I am not attempting to excuse your experience, I would merely like to explain where the problems lie. In recent months we have put together a new team of staff, brought in a new restaurant manager, re-vamped our menu and introduced burlesque into the kitchen entertainment. I have not received one complaint in the last month.

I really hope that you choose to join us on another time so we can compensate for your last experience at the Kitchen. Apologies again for the dissapointment.

    Thanks

I've always loved going out to Proud Camden to watch bands or sit in the stables with drinks, but it's even better now they have the kitchen there. It's great for young people as well because it won't break the bank and you can get all your friends on one table. Then at 10pm you can stay put and sit and enjoy some live music or go through to the other side for free! It's a wonderfully social place with a really great atmosphere, not to mention the food, which is absolutely delicious! You can either go for the full on three course meal or choose from a selection of other dishes, either way you're going to get a fantasic, value-for-money meal and have a fab night out.

Quite eagerly I got to Proud a little early a few weeks ago to find that the bands I wanted to see in the main bit were still setting up, so we decided to wander into the kitchen and ended up nearly missing the bands we were having so much fun. It's a great atmosphere that encourages you to socialise and the food was really good, especially the risotto! I've been twice now and have absolutely no complaints.
