Nice view, ok pizzas and flamkuchen (something like a pizza without tomato but lots of onions), very friendly service, nice and cosy fireplace but don’t sit too close to it, because it’s getting hot in here, way too hot.
All in all a nice place to go with friends after a walk in the park, especially now that it is getting cold outside.
I can understand the Berliner's complaints about the prices, because, for Berlin this place is damned expensive. Coming from Hamburg, it's just averagely priced though, so I'm not going to mark them down for that. It's all very nicely put together... beautiful decking, loads of deck-chairs and picnic tables.
When we were there on a Sunday afternoon the place was full of young families with little kids running around everywhere - thankfully there was little screaming.
It was quite amusing watching everyone try their hand at rowing. I'd say that more than 50% were terrible and at least 1 in 5 rowed the boat backwards :)
One of my favorite biergartens in Berlin. For the ambience, the sorroundings, I give five stars. For the the service only two stars. There is really a lack of trained staff. I hope to inyou some sunny days in Berlin at the 'Neuen See'
This is one of those places that I love and hate.
Right by a lake, surrounded by trees and very close to the Siegessäule, the location really is fabulous. And that's why I gave it one star, because as far as I am concerned, this is the only positive point to be made.
The missing stars come from a combination of factors:
• rip-off prices
• over-crowded, it's hard to find seats and there are queues for drinks and food
• poor service, these guys are simply not trained and there is a staff shortage
• there really isn't that much choice here, mostly just Weisswürstchen, Leberkäse, Pizza and some cake and drinks.
My recommendation to the owner(s): Train or replace your management, this place has the potential to be amazing.
The place is great.. in the middle of Tiergarten and with a view on a small lake (Neuer See) you could forget you are in the very center of Berlin. Helas, poor service and overpricing will bring you quick back into real life.
Berlin has many beer gardens, but this one tops the list. A refreshing walk past the back of the zoo, over a bridge and through some trees opens out to a big area covered in fairy lights with rows of tables overlooking the Neuer See.
Dinner will set you back around 10€. Grab a pint and fresh leberkäse (a baked loaf of finely ground corned beef, pork and onions) with potato salad, snuggle onto one of the tables – don’t be shy, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere with some friends.
One of my favorite biergartens to take visitors to. Because of the “garten” part, a lot of people who have never been to one expect it to be in a picturesque, outdoor setting. As Mark points out, most, in reality, aren’t. At least the popular ones in the city itself. But am Neuen See really is very pleasant, nestled in a corner of the Tiergarten. We ate indoors in the greenhouse like restaurant and enjoyed it. Also one of the few (only?) places actually in the Tiergarten where you can replenish…I believe?
When you’re sitting at Café am Neuen See looking out across the see (Lake) it’s easy to forget that you’re in the centre of Berlin. There’s also a different vibe to the place than to your average biergarten in Prenzleur Berg , the clientele is generally a bit older and a lot wealthier. So if you’re looking for hip and happening, you’re probably in the wrong kietz (district).
Prices are a little higher than some places €3.70 for a half litre of bier and just under €9 for a pizza, but the idyllic setting with the high quality fare makes it worthwhile.
There are a couple of large sandpits to keep the kids entertained and if you’re feeling more energetic then you can hire a rowing boat to take out on the lake for €10 per hour.
