I agree with you! The term vintage is different from retro but Armstrongs sells more of the latter and everything seems to be a lot more expensive than it used to be. I think they are trying to be more mass market than they were before.

Vintage treasure trove- one of several dotted around Edinburgh. Perfect for bargain hunting!

Wow, this place is crazy.
If you like vintage and eclectic go here.
A bit pricey I found, but I think it is somewhere you need to do some diggin around and looking for deals.
VERY good for costumes.

Purchased many a fancy dress outfit from here :-) This shop gives Glasgow and London a run for their money, when it comes to second-hand boutiques.

Armstrongs isn't what it used to be. I used to love raking through their truly vintage stuff and finding some gems! It was SO well priced and the staff were mega helpful. I find now that such true vintage gems are up high out of reach or on the rails full of holes and rips. The racks are now littered with modern unwanted tat and fancy dress. I found a 1950s tea dress full of holes and rips with a sleeve missing and they were still charging £60 for it. It does have a beautiful selection of vintage wedding dresses but you'll need a ladder to look at them. You can also get an amazing range of vintage swimwear. It's worth a visit but you may be disappointed. Don't be put off by the musky smell - that's vintage!!

Maybe my tastes have changed but I don't find it as good as it used to be.
was also told twice that 'the shop is closing, hurry up' even though there was still ten minutes till closing time!

Nooo! Say it ain't so..? I remember Armstrong's as one of the best vintage places in town and was excited about visiting again this summer - anywhere else you'd recommend?

By all means still go! They actually have two stores in Edinburgh now, one in South Clerk St too. I would also recommend Rusty Zip on Teviot Place. Lady Jojo's is also nearby http://www.ladyjojosboutique.com/

The Rusty Zip is where I bought my leather jacket (still going strong 7 years later). What's Lady Jojo's like? You should do a review! I'm going to have to start making lists..

Wow what an experience! A heavenly hour spent with my two favourite gals- my mum and my best mate, looking for the perfect dress for a very big day coming up. The dresses certainly didn't disappoint, the girls in store made our visit such a pleasure, the smile on my mum's face is a memory to treasure.
An hour wasn't enough to really explore the fuller delights of the endless racks of clothes- great excuse to visit again!

What a wee gem. If you're happy to trawl through racks, the vintage section will no doubt reveal lots of lovely things. If you're after fancy dress, Armstrong's has a rail of pre-fab costumes and wigs so you don't need to spend forever looking.
Set aside an hour if you're a serious buyer, there are so many things to see. They also do vintage wedding gowns but you'll have to ask a member of staff to help (only accessible by ladder).

Armstrong's is one of my favourite all-time places in the whole city... possibly the whole world! As a genuine every-day wearer of vintage clothing, this place is a total mecca -- everything from fabulous Victoriana to secondhand bargainous band shirts, jeans, kilts, coats etc. You really can buy ALL your clothes here! The staff are cool quirky ladies who are always willing to help, too. Awesome! A must visit in Edinburgh.

ahh, i love this place. it’s like walking into some crazy fantasy. vintage clothes of all shapes and glitters festoon the walls and rails. i’ll admit, i only occasionally get to buy something here, but i can never resist a wander in and sifting through the endless wonders that it provides. and when that odd purchase does come around, it is always a treasure.

Again , another Edinburgh institution. More vintage than second hand, at the front of the shop they have a lot of period clothing that is more or less of a collectible condition. They have a good range of clothes from different eras, 40s , 50s 60s. Towards the back there is a section with a lot of uniforms and mens outfits, dinner jackets, kilts and kilt jackets and other more bizarre items. In the room at the back the clothes hang on several layers and you need ladders to reach the higher levels. This really gives it the feeling of an aladins cave. They have good ranges of party dresses arranged according to size. They are also well known for their range of cashmere jumpers and cardis - a lot of them would be quite easy to give another lease of life with a bit of applique or alteration.
Accessories are also covered, from shoes to scarves to period gloves to umbrellas and some costume jewellery. Definitely a fun destination for a rainy afternoon, or if you have a function to attend and want something individual. They are not the cheapest, but a fairly reliable place to find something to fit the bill.

Great shop! A must see for every fashionista. The interior decorations just transport you to a different time. Lots of random trinkets and unique accessories! I love how they sort everything by decade. It makes it easier to search for clothes for a fancy dress party!
