if i was rating just the food i would give a 4, been 3 times can't fault the food myself although a friend i once went with found a hair in her food when we complained to the staff they couldn't even understand english, the service you get here is the worst ive ever experienced, they made me and my 70 year old mother pay up front as soon as we sat down, whereas everyone else paid after they have eaten, talk about making the customer feel unwelcome!! i'll go here again simply because i like the food but if you want to be treated nice then don't come here because the staff are terrible and dont care about the customer just want their money!!

Absolutely awful customer service and food.
My friend found a hair in his food, which put us all off eating there and we got refunded with 2 glasses of coke. fan-bloody-tastic.
Duty Manager, Lily, was extremely unprofessional.
Avoid this 'restaurant' at all costs, I can't believe it can even be classed as a restaurant after this evening

The two of us went to May Sum for the 1st time on Tuesday evening. Loved it.
Much nicer atmosphere and decor than Big Wok. Worth paying slightly more for to feel like you are in a proper restaurant and not a school canteen.
Service was good. Replenishment of dishes was continually going. Tepanyaki was on the go and a lovely selection of dishes inclusing sushi area.
Excellent selection of dishes, I particularly liked the enormous mussels in chilli and garlic and the range of starters including yummy prawn toast and spare ribs.
Similar range to Red Hot Buffet Shack and you pay less.
Would definitely recommend this and visit again.

I thought May - Sum was very nice and I will be going again :) The Chocolate Fountain was enough to make me jump up and down with joy and make my friend smile - alot . There is alot of food you can choose from and you can go up as many times as you like . May-Sum is the best Chinese Food Resturant I have ever been to and it is much better the Aroma .
5/5
5 stars
For five people the food was around 70 pound and you can go up as many times as you like . 70 POUND NOT INCLUDING DRINKS !
Go here x
It is well worth the money

I booked for a party of 22 people and everyone loved it! So much we were in there almost 2 hours, great choice, lovely chinese flavours, just scrummie, going back again soon, all this for just £6.50 on a Wed afternoon, fab price for what you can eat. Thanks May Sum, fab time.

It's Big Wok for grown ups.
The upholstered interior gives out a forboding visage to any passing teenagers. The thought of maybe having to use a knife and fork properly scares them all the way to Big Wok, and that is for our mercies.
The food selection is slightly less broad than Big Wok, though the quality is perfectly normal for the price charged.
It costs a tiny bit more than Big Wok which seems to be very succesful at keeping the annoying chimps at bay. Peaceful respectful clients enjoying a low priced rough and tumble all you can eat canteen in warm surroundings.
The pricing is perfect. Cheap, but more than Big Wok. Keeping the riff raff firmly where it belongs.
Overall, I say 4 out of 5, because you can't score 5 without topless waitresses. Got it?
EDIT:
DATELINE 29th November 2009 4pm.
Attempted to eat at May Sum for the first time in a month. Left immediately in shock at what I found.
It's turned into Kids Delight (tm). Saw more pushchairs and prams than I saw seats, and many of the dishes were empty. They attempted to seat me in a deep corner, but I couldn't keep up with the seater as kids kept running into me covering me in various colours of food. Thanks again breeders!
I actually went from May Sum directly to McDonalds, and McDonalds had less kids and was quieter.
So that about wraps it up for Chinese Buffets in Nottingham, a big thank you to the teenage chav & breeding community for utterly ruining yet another beautiful thing.

This review is genius. I'm going to visit this restaurant on the strength of this review, even though it doesn't fulfill my usual criteria of having topless waitresses.
I've to been to Big Wok down the road from May Sum and it does'nt compare to it. I've read the reviews i feel its unfair to say may sum is expensive, as its only 55p more! I feel the atmosphere in a restaurant is important and the surroundings from May Sum is far much better. Relaxed and you don't feel rushed, customer service is execellent. Great selection of food and they got cocktails!! You should feel comfortable when your out with your friends and family. As for Big Wok sorry... but your restaurant feels like as though your back in school in the canteen i don't think its a venue to take families out eg..birthday... Also I don't like to be asked at the door for receipt on my way out.
WELL DONE! May Sum

I think May Sum is pretty good, as far as all you can eat chinese buffets go. Much better than Big Wok, a little more relxed and the decor is a lot more tasteful!! Also you can use your student discount card there, another reason why I like it :)

I was disappointed with this may sum, the one in Derby is excellent. The food was only just warm, the rice and noodles were nearly cold. I did complain and the manager switched up the heaters under the food and replaced the noodles and rice - so customer service was excellent. Food did taste nice with replenishments on going. Although I did find the drinks expensive and it is rather small and the food area tended to get congested very quickly.

As I love May Sum in Derby I had to try out the new restaurant once it opened up in Notts too.
I must say on first impressions it looks fab inside. A very nice interior with sofas by the door and a much bigger bar area than Derby. The toilets are very small but really clean - Actually a little too clean as there was a very strong smell of bleach in there.
We thought it would be nice to sit by the window but as the restaurant filled up it became evident that was a bad idea.As Lunchtime brought in the crowds it became obvious how small this restaurant is and how they have packed as many tables as they can into a smaller space.
We were hemmed in at our little window table and so each time we wanted to replenish our plates we had to squeeze past other diners. It also meant the staff couldn’t get to us to collect our plates so we just took them with us.
I can’t fault the food at all. There is a great selection of dishes with my favourite prawn toasts there. In fact there is so much of a selection that I missed a lot of the choice. My friend found the crispy duck and pancakes which I missed completely, I also missed the crispy seaweed and we didn’t find out until it was too late that all the seafood and salads were hidden by the dessert sections.
Of course as they are trying to squash as many people in as possible, there were tables along the window next to the food and not much space to walk up and down so you had to be careful not to tread on people’s toes or kick over bags.
Unfortunately even though the place was full to bursting, they didn’t have the chocolate fountain going and the dessert selection is very poor with a few fairy cakes and lumps of Orange and Apples.
Also the Ice Cream machine wasn’t working but as there was an employee trying to fix it, we decided to wait and see if we could still get some.
Eventually we did get some ice cream. There was a selection sweet sauces so that made up a little bit for the lack of dessert choice.
At the end of the meal we went to pay and were gobsmacked that it came to £17 for 2 of us. This broke down to £2 for 2 diet Cokes and £6.50 each for the food. This is more expensive than the May Sum in Derby and it is also £1.50 dearer than the Big Wok right next-door. No wonder there is nowhere in the restaurant that actually states the price per person.
In all - Great food but not very spacious surroundings and a little too pricey in comparison.
