Kingsland Basin

According to the list of water side residences I saw, this is a location to watch out for… Though currently many of the surroundings are not so wonderful, there are a large number of new warehouse developments going up around the basin. I’ve not seen inside the one they note, but have seen inside another. To get to the flat I visited, which is one of the lucky ones with water views, you go through a gated arch, through a courtyard, a corridor with dark grey slate flooring, and then to a lightwell, with access to the flats via metal grating balconies and steps which ring as you walk on them. All rather striking and impressive! The water view isn’t that stunning really. But they’ve made the best of it with little seating areas off the main rooms with ceiling to floor windows that make you feel you are sitting suspended over the water.

Back outside… The public view of Kingsland Basin is from the canal bank. Here the towpath is on the basin side. As a result there’s a bridge over the end: a sharp hummock, which makes a nice place to stand and survey the barges docked below. To be honest I don’t rate it as one of the prettiest sites on the canal…
