strengthofabear: “Came here on New Years Day for Lunch with Ruiz and others, ended up staying till 11pm. Good jukebox. Helpful staff. Nice beer garden. Good location. Food was very average, standard pub stuff at best and not a lot of choice.” more...4 reviews of the three compasses in English
Music policy is a bit off, too loud, and they turn the lights down just as you get to the interesting article in the paper.
Beer is good and so is the food, but the reasons given above preclude our return. Sad.
Visited today for the first time in ages(10/10/10)
The music and lighting policy seems to have changed
for the better. Tring Colley's Dog in top nick but the
Adnams Kolner was just reasonable, which was a bit
disappointing as I'd heard that this year's vintage was
better than last year's.
Picks up two extra stars.
Ooops the lights have just gone down, make that only one
extra star
This is the only pub in the area that i would consider drinking or eating in. Good selection of ales ( timothy taylors landlord, deuchars ipa & london pride are the 3 regulars alongside 3 ever changing guest ales - the ales are well kept too never had a bad pint here. also may try b4 u buy and they do take out cartons - 2pint capacity) reasonable food - not quiet gastropub but certainly much better than wetherspoons or other similar stuff. friendly bar staff & management, believe there is a pub quiz too. only downside is a jukebox that quiet frankly has a rather crap selection i had difficulty finding anything to put on but the damn thing automatically plays anything (usually something crap ) if no one puts any money in -boo! please get rid of this landlord. Luckily the barstaff feel the same about this and often turn it down. With regards to the other reviewers slating this pub for the "care in the community" punters i've never experienced anything out of place here so i guess that must've been a one off.
God this place is like a mourge. Miserable sucidal "care in the community"punters just what you dont want on a wet Tuesday night. Expensive food out sourced from the local Tescos. When we ordered sandwiches the barmaid left with a fiver and came back with a Tescos shopping bag, obviously they had a run on the fine cusine that evening. Shame this place is so bad.It is in a good location, imposing architecture and so close to 'Crouche' End and its fine bars and pubs. Will def not rec. unless you want a taste of Hornsey low life.
vagrantpunk never seen or experienced anything like this in here only pub in the area that i would consider visiting must've been a one off "dodgy" night

This very out of place pub is a really pleasant surprise considering the area that it’s in. It was refurbished a few years ago into a modern/trendy bar, and they definitely did something right.
Despite being modern, the atmosphere inside is very warm. The staff are friendly, there’s a wide range of beer and you’re never left waiting for long at the bar.
You get a few locals that seem to think they own the place, but when ignored they seem to get bored of 'playing up’ to the newbies.
