I really enjoyed my meal at El Mexicano. They have really great deals for lunch, though I opted for shrimp tacos which were a bit more expensive. I wish the portion was a bit bigger for what a paid, but it was still immensely tasty and I came out satisfied. I was especially happy when I found out they served Dos Equis beer, which is lovely.

I haven't been since I went with a group several years ago, but the service was so bad that I have no intentions of going again to find out if things have improved.

The staff got several of our orders wrong, and half the food arrived at our table lukewarm. They didn't seem to be particularly apologetic about this fact either.

All in all it was one of the (if not the) most disappointing evening that I have had with this particular group of people, with whom we have visited at least two dozen different venues in Brighton over the years. Some of the places we happily go back to, but nobody seems to have particularly good memories of El Mexicano.

The food is ok and probably would have tasted really good had it been served at the right temperature and had everyone got what they had actually ordered. Maybe I am doing them injustice as it has been several years since the experience, so hopefully they have now got their act together. I can also imagine that at lunchtime the service and quality of food is probably better, as they won't be as overcrowded as they were when we came for a visit, but unless I am in a very adventurous mood, I am not going to test them for any possible improvements.

This place has a great location on New Road – probably my favourite street in Brighton to sit outside in the sunshine. I’ve never eaten here in the evenings, but they do a fabulous lunch deal: two tapas and a glass of wine for £5.95.

Last time I went here, I had the paella and the Spanish omelette – the perfect sized portion (and price) for a light lunch. Considering that a glass of wine is between £3.50-£5 depending on where you go in the city, this is absolutely crackin’ value for central Brighton.

The wine is good, the location is fabulous and the food is authentic and tasty. What more could you ask for when you’re a wannabe lady wot lunches?

Review of El Mexicano from 17 November 2008

This restaurant is located near bus stops and lots of bars and pubs, making it ideal for nights out. U can choose whether to sit outside (if its sunny) or inside, either of them is well staffed with waiters. The food was lovely, especially the 'home recipes’ which tasted fresh and organic. Highly recommended for Mexican food lovers.
