I was fortunate enough to kick off my gig experience in Hamburg with a trip to Knust to see a swedish girl band. What a joy.
The beer selection isn’t so good, but they had a weizen, the venue is spacious, good crowd and a nice atmosphere. These guys are really into their music, and they always have a good line up. Well worth a visit.

Brilliant bar,gig venue in Hamburg, just off Feldstrasse. Live music here almost every night for reasonable prices. Dark, hot, good sound - if you stand at the front not only do you get to be right up close to the bands but you can use the stage like a table as well bonus! a mixture of some well known bands and bands just starting out - with many bands returning as they love the place/atmosphere so much. Plus there’s a sausage stand attached just outside!

I love “Knust” for gigs as well as for the bar itself.
There are always good (Indie / Alternative / Electro) gigs held at “Knust”. It’s a small-ish venue also sporting a kinda tribune (with some seats for the elderly) a few steps up above the main room.
Ticket prices mostly range from about 7 Euro to 17 Euro.
Often you can still buy tickets at the door if you decide to attend spontaneously. Quite nice.
The bar at “Knust” is a cool place as well:
Sometimes they show football matches there on a big screen and sell cheap beer. (2.50 € for a bottle of Becks or Astra).
Or else you can just hang out there and easily enjoy yourself in a tourist-free zone.
If you are lucky you will catch the witty owner (one of the owners?) Karl Roschinsky who’s always up for a chat or likes to quiz you about some trivia. (The prize would usually be a free beer…)
So all in all it’s a great place… good music, cold beer and always a chance for a chit-chat.

Great venue near to the St Pauli stadium, I was there for a 2 day festival wtjt in July, It’s a really great space, big stage, 2 bar counters and a seperate area for merchandise/seating, lots of clean toilets, outside seating area if you get too warm, Wurst stand outside if you get peckish!

A cool place to watch the Euro 2008 football tournament. They have a couple of screens inside and outside. So go watch the games, and drink some beer with your friends!

Somehow I’ve not managed to review Knust! Strange. Anyway - I love this venue. What’s not to like? I’ve seen The Hoosiers, Vampire Weekend, The National, Haydn… and loads more. You get even generally get tickets on the door for a lot of things. It’s a fantastic size, not too big but big enough, cheap beer, and the bands invariably come out and drink in the bar later on, so great for meeting celebs. Outside, they show the big football games for free, and have a bratwurst stand run by two really friendly guys who have been known to ply us with free beer! Fantastic!

A really decent venue which is only a 5 minute walk from my house! Lots of famous bands pass through Knust and i’m sure the right acts arouse an awesome atmosphere. Unfortunately last nights band made me want to end it all right there and then. “Beach House” have got to be one of the worst bands i have ever seen. I ended up walking out of the concert and playing frisbee with some like-minded randoms outside.
But let’s not take anything away from Knust. Just because Beach House sucked, this should not reflect badly on what is really quite cool venue. I’ll be coming back.

I’ve been to the Knust a few times already, once for the Decemberists concert in early 07’ and once to see the Balkan Beat Box in May 08’. Both times, the concerts were packed and it became difficult to breathe, not to mention dance. The concert hall is of medium size but it seems they’re booking artists which draw in a larger crowd than they can handle. I’m not complaining - I had a wonderful time on both occasions and the smoking ban in the hall itself is a blessed change. But it’d be useful if the folks running the Knust would consider better ventilation.
