They started building the Cathedral Belltower in 1173 and finished it 200 years later, by which time it had a pronounced list to starboard. Amazingly, they still let you climb it, but of course such good work has been done in recent times to shore it up. An absolute 5-Star attraction, polluted only by the rows of trashy stalls in the vicinity. The Pisan city fathers must take the blame for letting in the hordes of African Bead-Sellers and other sundry itinerants who plague your visit. Pisa is something of a one-trick pony, but it is still a must-see destination. Try to avoid its airport!
