The Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel

Lovely building, although the whole experience couldve been a little better. Friendly staff which was great although not impressed with the choice for room service. Mini bar options were also lacking. Not sure I’d agree with the four star rating.

The Alveston Manor is part of the Macdonald group – no nothing to do with a certain Ronald and his burgers, but a rather upmarket small Scottish hotel chain. It is a picturesque building in beautiful grounds with a particularly magnificent cedar tree under which the concierge proudly told us the first performance of ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ is rumoured to have taken place. The hotel is really conveniently located only a few minutes walk away from the town centre and the RSC theatres. Go for a standard room to get a really comfortable 7ft bed rather than paying a premium for a feature room, unless you really want quaint old charm (as you then only get a standard 5ft double). The 16th century wood panelled bar with its large stone fireplace is a wonderfully cosy place to relax over a drink before going to bed. Highly recommended and fabulous breakfasts.

Unbelievable building in Jacobean style. I grew up in the area and fondly remeber visiting the Alveston Manor Hotel when Disney were filming Candleshoe. I got to meet both Jodie Foster and david Niven. Little has changed in 30 plus years and it still has the same feel. Some of the rooms are lovely and we stayed recently on a ground floor room that even had its own terrace area. Its not cheap but it is something special. the gardens are beautiful and best enjoyed on a summer’s day as you gave at the river Avon over your G&T. For such a old style country house feel it is unbelieveable that yo can get to the centre of Stratforn in 5 minutes walk
