14 reviews of Flughafen Hamburg / Hamburg Airport in English
The longer I live in Hamburg and the more I travel around Europe the more I appreciate departing & arriving back at Hamburg Airport.
30 mins cheap (€2.80) S-bahn from Stadthausbrucken in the centre of Hamburg, with the train arriving directly under the Terminal 2, its a quick hop up the escalators, shimmy through security and you are through to the gates.
Loads of nice places to eat, drink and shop; everything is organised and spotless and you can walk from one end to the other in about 20 minutes: try doing that in Heathrow!
Probably the nicest Airport I use and as said before always a pleasure to return to.
As modern European airports go, it's pretty standard. Clean, unnecessarily high roof (that had me pitying whoever cleans the windows) but overall nice and efficient and easy to negotiate.
In the departure lounges you'll find a broad-ish range of food, including some healthy options. Saying that, I almost died after shelling out for my pizza and then clocking the lady that was knocking it together using sliced tomatoes! You may call it a high class problem, I call it sacrilegious. And so already determined not to like it, I moaned in-between mouthfuls to anyone that would listen.
Not the best shopping options, mind; I returned home giftless for the missus, which didn't go down too well.
P.S. Apparently, it's one of the last remaining airports in Europe located so central to the city it serves (a city with 2500 bridges, I'll have you know).
Good things about Hamburg Airport:
- Clean
- Efficient
- Quiet
Which is all you could really ask of an airport, really. I was in and out of there with minimum fuss. Perfect.
But it loses a star for having dull food places (sandwiches, salads and healthy pizza when we were craving fried breakfasts for our sore heads) and even duller shopping (no Prada or Tiffany's here).

Well-organized and practical airport, even pretty in selected spots.
No air of "personality" and a bit soulless, though.
It's nice and quiet, with a good LH lounge. However the food and shopping after the gate is very limited. Quick connection to the city via train or taxi.
My only problem with Hamburg airport is that it is too small and it doesnt have any direct flight to my home country.
Hamburg airport is actually so small, that on the UEFA cup final game day... ALL flights had between 2 to 5 hours delay (one flight even had an indefinite delay)
hence i missed my connecting flight in prague, and got stuck there for 24h, and took the next connecting flight.
Otherwise... it's clean, not far from the city center, food is expensive.
Don't exchange money there, the rates are very unfair for the 'tourist' oh and don't forget to do your tax free there !
Easy to access via public rail, clean efficient and polished, pretty much what you need for an airport. Security are very gruff, and as a word of warning they will not speak English to you while you're getting the pat down, even if it means they have to grab you foot to move you.
Most of the shops are before security, and very few food places once your on the other side though.
The Hamburg Airport is generally hassle-free and comfortable to fly to and from, but wholly inefficient when it comes to security. After checking in my luggage (it doesn’t go through x-ray before check-in!!!), I schlep myself through the first round of on-board baggage security. After that’s through, I get to walk down to the gate, which brings me through another round of on-board baggage security - where they check the same bag they checked 15 minutes prior and pat me down AGAIN.
Added security when flying to Israel is always a good idea, but Hamburg Airport seem to not be able to figure out how to do it. If I haven’t got explosives in my bra the first time around, I’m not going to have explosives in my bra 15 minutes later and for heaven’s sake, X-ray the luggage and ask passengers security questions!
I don’t feel safe flying to Israel from here at all, but it’s cheaper and direct.
SGH Such procedure is nowhere to be found anywhere around Europe, is it?
EDIT: OK. Having been at TLV now, I see what your point is. Yet, the concept of security at HAM is just different, and wouldn't say it's less safe or generally worse.

Liron Yes, it is. It is found at Schoenefeld in Berlin and any airport which services an Israeli airline on a flight to israel (El Al, Israir, Arkia, Sun D'or).

Hamburg airport is pretty good in many respects;
It’s efficient. It’s close to the city. It’s pleasant. The S-bahn train into the city costs only €2.65. Check-in, baggage drop and security are a breeze. It’s generally a stress-free experience which is pretty rare in airports.
However, it does have two obvious drawbacks;
1) There is an incredibly poor selection of food (and shopping in general) available when you get gate-side of security. I had a choice between three types of croisant, three types of sandwich and two types of muffin, and that was it.
2) The building is incredibly long. My friend was told to check-in in terminal 1 for his Easyjet flight, and as I had over an hour to kill I wandered along (I also checked in at terminal 1) to find him for a chat. A mile later, I was still no-where near “B28”, so I gave up. Also when trying to find gate “C04” it was interesting to see the gates numbered, C09, C08, C07, C05 and then C03?! Where was C04? Oh yeah, after C03, obviously.
Opens, spacious, airy and uncrowded and a really fast throughput of passengers at bag search. If you can deliver that, as Hamburg Airport does very well, then everything else is secondary.
On the secondary factors, Hamburg Airport also scores decently - a good choice of food in the central (upper) plaza area, compensates for the average snack bar facilities elsewhere. The shopping isn’t great, but unlike many, that really isn’t the reason I go to an airport.
My only quibble, as often with German airports, is that by comparison with the open spacious main concourses, the lounges can be small and overcrowded - sort of defeating their purpose.
I love this airport! It’s easy to get around, there are loads of little shops and stalls (though a bit expensive) and little eateries a-plenty. It is modern, clean and fancy looking.
One word of warning though, the airport is incredibly long and don’t leave leave getting to your gate until the last minute! I’ve been caught out a few times!
The airport is well situated in the Northwest of Hamburg. It can handle now even more passengers after it was rebuild. It is always pleasant to land in Hamburg, because there are usually not so many people.

Hamburg Airport is okay. I like its open and spacious glass design. The connection with the Jasper bus into the city of Hamburg is good and reasonably priced. The airport feels safe and you cannot get lost. I once spent a night here.
Netty @ Phil: It was almost two years ago when I spent the night here
;-)). I arrived in the evening from Bristol - and there was no train to Göttingen or anywhere really. There was nobody to pick me up either. It was before Qype or the Couchsurfing Project ;-)) - and I did not know where to stay.
Okay, I knew of hotels - and I had stayed in one before. I had a suitcase with me (cannot carry heavy things). We had just bought a house in Machynlleth - and my project with the Archives Network Wales had come to an end - so every penny mattered really to me. I’d rather spend some money on a new pair of jeans or a shirt or something nice and lasting than in a hotel in Hamburg, I thought. Sad but true. However, I was never scared at this airport (like another time - the same year - in Marseille where I also slept at the airport). At Hamburg Airport I was surprised how many people spend the night there - even a family with children aged around ten or teenagers. I would have never thought so.
You feel a bit like a down and out person - worth the experience - and now I would not fancy doing it again. The air-conditioning was very cool - and I covered myself with a coat. Other families had a blanket….oh dear ;-)).
This is the hell why…;-)).
The night felt long….you could see the security, people closing their shops and opening them again in the morning…...

Generally excellent, I’m knocking a star off since they managed to not load my luggage the other week and caused me no end of stress at the other end. However, considering I’ve flown out of here about 50 times, it’s not a bad ratio. Everything else about this place is great, and they’re gradually improving the food situation (there is now a half-decent sushi place).
If you’re flying within the Schengen zone then your plane will dock right next to the exit - it’s only the UK and Swiss flights where you have to walk for a kilometre!
Actually thinking of giving it the full 5 stars, since the first time I arrived here I saw a TU-154M take off, probably the most exciting airport experience I ever had!
